Rating: Summary: not quite accurate Review: I found this book to be very good, but lacks information on horse breeds. Not all of the horse breeds are represented.
Rating: Summary: best horse book i've read Review: I have been involved with horses for over 40 years, and I still found this book to be an excellent resource. It is exhaustive, yet well-written and entertaining. I am a retired teacher and I own a large stable and I have made it required reading. Actually, it's one of the best Dummies book I've read. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.... Review: I have no knowledge of how to act around horses or horsey people. I am an animal lover...but dogs are my specialty. Thank God for this book! I learned so many basics. This book was perfect for me. And after reading about all the hidden costs and all of the time involved....I still want a horse! But at least there wont be any surprises.
Rating: Summary: The ultimate horse book Review: I have reviewed Ms. Pavia's animal books before for various publications including Newsday and the Voice, and enjoyed them all. But this is her best. This book was an extremely easy guide and an equally enjoyable read for horse owners of every level of expertise. Filled with passion and well-thought out information, HfD is the ultimate horse book. It's smart, funny and most important--helpful.
Rating: Summary: An awesome book Review: I just picked this book up and enjoyed it. However when Horse Sense 101 says they focus too much on the hardships of ownership, i think she is totally off. Owning horse IS hard, I have been riding for seven years! Every single abuse case is a case where the owner did not consider how much a horse would need. This book does a great job illustrating this, and preventing cases like this. They are simply tellng you the realistic facts of owning a 1200 pound animal.
Rating: Summary: Great beginner's book Review: I lost my legs in a torpedo accident in Gulf Storm, but this book got me over my anguish, and got me up in the stirrups again. If Im not riding my horse now, Im washing her. This book also taught me how to get a horse to drink stale water, and sit up and beg, and thats GREAT.Thanks Amazon.com.!!!!
Rating: Summary: This is a book for WINNERS! Review: I lost my legs in a torpedo accident in Gulf Storm, but this book got me over my anguish, and got me up in the stirrups again. Rating: Summary: Everything you need to know! Review: I loved this book and it's very helpful! It explains everything in a way anybody could easily understand, yet it's not boring! I would definitely recommend this book to anybody thinking about buying a horse or anyone who just wants to learn more about horses!
Rating: Summary: A good introduction for the uninitiated Review: I picked this one up, wondering how a "Dummies" book could possibly begin to address the whole subject of horses. There are thousands of books in the field, and one more? It was a pleasant surprise. There is a ton of easily digestible information here, and while I would have preferred to see more emphasis on safety, I found little I could fault. Biggest complaint: although mentioned once in the text, and with an (incorrect) e-mail address in the Appendix, the United States Pony Clubs deserved more attention as a good way to get your kid started out safely. It's far easier and safer than self-instruction!
Rating: Summary: A perfect basic reference! Review: I was honored to be able to review an early copy of this book -- and proud to give an endorsement quote. I'm a lifelong horse-lover, and I used to ride a great deal. (I have a once-broken bone to prove it from a jump I went over without the benefit of my horse!) Horses are complicated -- to understand, to buy or lease, to care for, to equip, to train and to handle. Audrey's book does a wonderful job explaining it all, and her love of these marvelous animals comes through on every page. If you dream of horses, this is a book you must have! -- Gina Spadafori, Universal Press Syndicate pet-care columnist, author of "Dogs For Dummies" and co-author of "Cats For Dummies" and "Birds For Dummies."
