Rating: Summary: Incredibly comprehensive and useful Review: As someone new to owning horses, I found this book amazingly thorough, very intelligent, and clear. Well worth the price. Ms. Hill clearly knows what she's talking about, and covers in detail all issues involved in keeping horses: costs and time commitment, keeping your horse in a stall vs. on a pasture, what to look for when buying a property, a complete treatise on fencing, how to design a barn and other outbuildings, all aspects of feed, pasture layout/grass selection/rotation, proper sanitation, fire prevention and response, how to plan with flexibiity for future growth in case you decide to add more horses, and more. Includes sample "blueprints" of various acreage layouts including buildings, landscaping, type of fencing, etc. and explains why each choice was made for the example property. The author has thought of virtually everything, offering all kinds of tips as she lays out the pros and cons of your various options so you can decide what's best for your particular situation, instead of just foisting her opinions on you. Especially if you're a first-time owner, you'll be able to proceed with complete confidence after reading this book because you know you're not missing a single piece of information. I have decided to order several others by this author because it's easy to see that everything she writes is going to be information-packed, very helpful, and well-written.

Rating: Summary: A Must Have! Review: I bought this book when we first talked about having horses. We knew that we would have limited acreage and wanted to make the most of it for our new horses.Cherry Hill givens direct to point, no fluff information to use every single day. From fencing to feeding, you get sensible strategies. In fact, I mistakingly forgot this book while on vacation. Disheartened to lose the book, I mmediately ordered another copy. This book is a reference for every small farm or horse hobbiest.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I just received this book and I skimmed through it briefly, and I'm already thrilled that I bought it. It has excellent examples, charts comparing different things/cost/durability... I'm planning on building my own barn in the next 5 years or so, and this book will help me tremendously! Highly Recommended!
Rating: Summary: A wealth of Information Review: Since I have bought this book I have read it everytime I have a free minute. I have been working i the horse industry for many years now and am thinking of starting my own horse business. Although as I read the first half of the book I realise that I already know a lot of the information, there are still certain points that are new to me. It is an excellent resource of information for anybody thinking of starting a small horse business, and in particular to those people who have not worked extensively in the horse industry. For people who already have knowledge of the horse industry there is a wealth of information on the business side of running a farm and also for pitfalls to watch out for. This book has further inspired me to follow my dream of having my own horse business on my own land.
Rating: Summary: horsekeeping Review: The smallest "acreage" in this book was 3.5 acres!!! Try living in CALIFORNIA where most people have only 1 acre or even 1/2 acre for their horse. THAT is what I was looking for...how to manage TRULY SMALL amounts of land with a horse. GEEZ, 3 acres sounds like a RANCH. And the barn layouts. These barns look like the Taj Mahal! No way I have that much room. However, it did have interesting info I can use...like info on daily feed planning (that's in my horse care book). The rest...hmmm. not so useful. Maybe I need to look for HORSEKEEPING in a residential area?
Rating: Summary: Probably the best book on planning your property for horses Review: This common-sense guide, by a horse care expert, has information on planning your property, building design, fences, paddocks, fire safety, pasture and hay-lot management and much more. The book is packed with photos and with illustrations, plans and useful details of stable designs.
Rating: Summary: A Little Too Basic Review: To the extent the book focuses on factual information about horses, facilities, design, and management, it's a good book. Unfortunately the author too often digresses to lecture readers about how they should run their operations according to her own unique set of value judgments.
