Summary: A sample of some of Mr. Waldheim's work...
Review: For many years I have been growing roses and have read many books on the subject. I sat down and read this book from cover to cover and learned SO MUCH because these books put things in lay terms. I loved every minute of it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Wonderful Book You Must Own
Review: I am new to rose gardens and devoured this book in no time. Very interesting and helpful insights into the world of roses and how to care for them. My book has may bent over pages that I refer to over and over again. This book is a must for any beginner to roses.

Summary: Wonderful Book You Must Own
Review: I have a HUGE stack of rose books, all of which I've read cover to cover. This, along with Ortho's ALL ABOUT ROSES, are the most informative and easy to read.

I have about 30 different roses in my garden, most of which are covered in this book. I found his descriptions of each rose to be fairly true to my experience.

In addition, the tips for rose shopping and winter protection have been invaluable to me here in Massachusetts, where it's difficult to find rosarians with anything more than a very basic knowledge of rose culture. The index is thorough and makes finding the information I need a snap. I wish all rose books were this complete and this easy to use! If the next edition would have more pictures, it'd be the perfect rose book.

Summary: Great for the novice or the expert

Summary: I would give it 10 Stars if I could!
Review: I'll be the first to admit it that when it comes to gardening, I'm more of a greenhorn than a green thumb. In ROSES FOR DUMMIES, I have found a friend. This book is exceptional for several reasons. First it goes step-by-step through cultivating roses. And the lists are wonderful.

Lists for roses that can survive bitterly cold winters; hot and dry summers; hot and humid summers, lists of "can't miss" roses, as well of the roses to avoid (for various reasons.)

The step-by-step approach is typical of "...For Dummies" books and does not assume a knowledge of roses, flowers or gardenings.

While there may be books just as good for beginning rose gardeners, I don't see how it is possible for there to be a better book.

Great for the beginner and experienced rose grower. And the photos are beautiful (would have liked more). This book can make anyone feel comfortable growing roses and will help ensure their success!

Summary: Excellent book
Review: This book is excellent. I just decided to take planting roses as a hobby and this was the book I was looking for. It explains everything from choosing a rose plant, the different types of plants, how to plant them and how often to water them, how to prune them, etc. The very basics, just what a novice needs to learn.

Summary: This book gave me the courage to be ruthless
Review: You can tell from the other reviews that this book has the strengths and weaknesses of the other Dummies Books.

So I will tell you how this helped me. Twice this book has helped me. First I bought a Lady Banks (Rosa banksiae) rose, I did not realize that they grew VIGOROUSLY and could spread over 20 feet. This was a small area. After reading this in the "Roses for Dummies" book I ran outside ad saw Lady Banks reaching for my cat. Needles to say she (the rose) was moved to a location where she could go wild. My cat has recovered. The more important thing I learned from this book was that you have to be ruthless when it comes to pruning. Before the book I snipped and trimmed my floribundas, as any sane person would do with their favorite hedge. Well it got gnarled and mildewed. So back to the book I went to find in chapter 19 that the proper way to shear this particular type of rose was under the heading of "The shear pleasure of pruning floribundas and polyanthas" After that I did not even need to read the mildew section.

The only dummy is the one that does not buy this book.
