Rating: Summary: Heartwarming Story, Gorgeous Photos Review: After reading the authors' first book, "The Tao of Pug," I fell in love with little Wilson who readily spouted pearls of ancient Chinese wisdom (with a pug dog spin, of course). This time, Wilson puts that wisdom to work in a beautiful, inspirational story, as he sets out to do "the right thing," a good deed for the holidays. He comes upon a lost pug puppy, Homer, and together they take off on their great adventure to find the puppy a home.
The photos are both gorgeous and hilarious, and unlike all the other dog books out there, this tells a richly woven story about finding home, as well as finding the home within. Bravo to the authors who have outdone themselves. This book will be #1 on my Christmas shopping list, not just for pug people (I myself do not have a pug, though think they are adorable), all my nieces and nephews, and everyone I know who loves a heartwarming, inspirational story and wonderful photos.
Rating: Summary: Get your paws on this one! Review: Akin to the epic journey faced by Homer's mythic figure of Odysseus, Homer the pug's coiled tale is no less fraught with pugilism and intrigue as he em-barks on his journey home. The power of friendship and dogged determination make this a story that rises above mere doggerel. This is a tale you can sink your canines into. I liked it even better than, Mutts Ado About Nothing! I won't hound you any further. Go fetch it at your local bookstore today!
Rating: Summary: The wisdom of the Tao in a fun story of compassion Review: For this season of giving Nancy Levine delivers "Homer for the Holidays" a heart warming holiday story about the adventures of the Taoist Pug, Wilson and his young ward, Homer. In this adventure the duo of Wilson and Homer encounter all kinds of situations and circumstances, some good and some not so good that are met with compassion and the Taoist principle of doing the right thing. Its a great story to read to your kids (or to yourself) and it makes an excellent gift whether or not you are into Pugs and Taoism. And if you are into these things, you simply can't go wrong with this delightful, humorous and morally uplifting tale.
Rating: Summary: On Behalf of My Grandchild... Review: I love dogs. Sometimes I wonder who doesn't. As a child I was a bit frightened of dogs, but this phobia confounded me for while I had a fear of dogs, I also loved them. My fears were cured when a mixed of Great Dane and German Shepherd came to live at our house. Is exposure to a potential monster dog the best way to eliminate a fear of dogs? Probably not, but in my case it worked. Now at my mother's house there is always a resident pug. Pugs are sometimes referred to as "dogs that are so ugly, they're cute." I'm not sure they're ugly, but they are cute. They are also lovable and have pesky, yet endearing personalities. Pugs are as lively as large dogs but easy to care for, which makes them perfect for just about everyone. Pugs also love to be photographed, and pug books with photographs and greeting cards with pugs are both popular with people in general and especially with pug lovers. Anyone who loves pugs will immediately fall in love with HOMER FOR THE HOLIDAYS, a book that truly captures everything that is quintessential pug.
Now I almost gave HOMER FOR THE HOLIDAYS only four stars, but I figured pug lovers would gang up on me. Seriously, I did want to give the book only four stars due to the story. It involves Wilson the Pug who is looking for a good deed to do, and meets up with a young puppy named Homer who is searching for a home. The two go through all sorts of adventures and misadventures until a home is found. The story is cute and teaches lessons about the life through references to Chinese Tao philosophy. Readers should note that it is easy to mistake this book for a children's book, and while there is nothing in it that would be objectionable to children, it is probably not a read at bedtime book unless the child listening to the story is somewhat sophisticated.
So why the five stars? The photographs. Pugs are probably the most photogenic breed of dog and photographer/writer Nancy Levine captures the pugs in a variety of shots. One minute we see the pugs' dignity, the next we see their natural curiosity, as well as their loveable and amusing sides. Pug lovers will love the book for the photos alone, and as someone who has tried to capture pugs on film, it is a task that is harder than it looks. This book will be the perfect holiday gift for pug lovers, and anyone who enjoys these amusing dogs.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Present! Review: While braving yesterday's post-Thanksgiving crowds, seeking something special for the kids and kids-at-heart on my list, I found Nancy Levine's charming companion volume to last year's smash, "The Tao of Pug". This time out, our hero is Homer, who makes his way to 'satori' with the able assistance of Wilson and his wisdom.
Levine's photographs will strike your heart, as will the story, a new visitation to The Odyssey. Especially in today's troubled world, the story's driver -- to do the right thing -- will resonate with young and old.
I think I found the perfect gift! For dog-people, cat-people and people-people, you can't go wrong as you accompany Homer on his quest. Go 'Home-r for the Holidays' with this wonderful cast. Thank you, Ms. Levine! Keep 'em coming!
Rating: Summary: Bring Homer home to your house for the Holidays! Review: Wilson the Pug who delighted us all in "The Tao of Pug" once again enlists the aid of the person he owns, Nancy Levine, to help with this charming story. The delightful book features beautiful, comical and entertaining photos taken by Wilson's human, and a story that is both entertaining, heartwarming and educational.
Dog people will enjoy this book and people who are owned by Pugs, will really be thrilled with the beautiful sepia toned photographs and the clever story that explores the meaning of "home" and what it means to do a "good deed". And everyone knows there's nothing cuter in the whole world than a pug puppy!
I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike and it is a "must have" for any animal rescuers and pug lovers on your shopping list!
Or, as my pugs Bailey and Betty say, "4 Paws waaaaaaay up"!!
