Rating: Summary: awsome! Review: I love this book. I got it as a Christmas present and it was one of my favorites. I don't care if you can get the patterns for free on the web site. There are nice pictures here printed on nice paper very well protected buy the way the cover flap tucks into the back, you can't get bent pages this way. I love the creative pattens like the jelly scarf made out of gimp, how cool is that! Almost anything original that someone uses there imagination on is cool now. I am tierd of all of these books that are so prissy about yarn and the way they word things, whew! I like the way she writes the book as if she is talking to you. It may sound a little like Debbie Stoller, but come-on, is Debbie Stoller the only one allowed to write like she is talking to a human being? If the inspiration of the way this book is written did come from Stitch 'N Bitch, then thank you Debbie Stoller for setting the standards higher for cool people. There are lots of little tips about knitting all through the book. I like knowing how other people do things, trying lots of ways means you will find the best way for you!
Rating: Summary: Knitty.com right in your hands Review: As a big fan of Amy Singer's knitty.com, I already knew that some of the patterns on the website would be featured in this book. However, there are so many new patterns and some "old" patterns have been, thankfully, upsized so I don't have to do it myself or "tweaked" a little. Also, I have a tendency to lose patterns printed off the internet, but I almost never lose an entire book (almost never!). These are great patterns for beginners and more experienced knitters alike and although I do tend to forget how to get to the next page, the stand-up format is great and sits neatly on my desk while I knit. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the money Review: Don't even bother to purchase this book! I went through & counted how many of the EXACT patterns you can get for free online & it is 16!! I don't think it is ethical to put together a compilation of patterns that you can get for free (anyone with a computer can) and sell it as a "NEW" book. Just my opinion. Borrow it, but don't buy it!
Rating: Summary: One of the better books that's come out lately Review: I haven't knit in years. I'm mainly a crochet freak and a cross stitch nut. But I saw this book in the store and went nuts. I had to buy all the needles again and almost bought out Michael's yarn. I love the chullo best just because it's funky and the scarf knitted with tulle is an excellent present for a little girl (who's been pestering me lately to make her something). The only pattern I didn't like was the legwarmers. I remember them from the 80's and never want to see them again ;). Maybe there are a few things that a beginner shouldn't tackle but overall, this book rocks!
Rating: Summary: Fun and Educational Review: I know that there are some that say this book is not worth the money because a lot of the patterns are available at the online magazine. Well it is true that the patterns are available for free, but I didn't buy this book just for the patterns. I was impressed by the great knitting instructions, the clear guidlines and the lovely pictures in this book. I will get hours of fun and inspiration from it. Even if the patterns are available elsewhere they are not in a format where you can stand them up beside you on the couch while you knit, as you can with this books build in easel, nor are any print-outs I have managed as nice a quality as this book is. The style of book is unique, the patterns are fun, the instructs are good and clear. This is a lovely book just right for those who want to sit with a friend and learn to knit something new.
Rating: Summary: GREAT ILLUSTRATIONS!! Could be more explicit textwise. Review: I learned to knit solely by following the instructions and diagrams in this book. I had tried before to teach myself, but failed miserably. I would have given the book 5 stars except I felt the text could have been more informative. I love the stand-up design of the text that allows you to glance at the instructions and diagrams as you are practising your stitches. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to teach themselves to knit!
Rating: Summary: Great starting book Review: I ordered this book two weeks ago and love it! I had never knit before and now am the proud owner of my lovely green scarf! I had never heard of knitty.com before I ordered this book and, yes, most of the designs you can get off of the website for free but I would NEVER EVER have known where to begin with the patterns if I hadn't gotten this book. Knit Wit has all levels of patterns so once you get the hang of it you can move on to more advanced things. Also (what I find invaluable) are the references. There are alot of patterns out there for free but rarely do they spell out what CC, psso, WYIB etc actually mean. This is a great book for beginners starting a square one and has alot of things that you would actually want to make. It's a tad annoying to find things with the spiral bound at the top but that's so out weighed that I hesitate to even mention it. Anyways- I'm glad I bought it.
SLIGHT CHANGE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW: Perhaps I got a little ahead of myself. It's still a great book but now that I'm actually trying to read the patterns- even ones that are only supposed to be the easiest I'm having a little trouble. For those starting off with absolutely no clue (like me) you might need to do a little research on the internet to get a better understanding of somethings. Still all in a I'd give it a 4 (i just can't seem to change the number of stars above)
Rating: Summary: Not my cup of tea.... Review: Need a felted bucket for your kniting/crocheting supplies? Ever thought about making a nose warmer for these cold winter days? Have you or someone you love got a svelte figure that would look good in a knitted skirt? If you can say yes to these questions KNIT WIT by Amy Singer may be the book for you.
Singer says she is horribly allegic to wool, however, several of the projects in this book appear to be constructed from wool fibers (are they synthetic, or did soomeone else knit them?). Several of the projects involve felting, which refers to the process that takes place when you accidently wash your favorite sweater in hot-hot water. Her book looks like a steno pad which you can stand up to read a page. Thus the claim to be a no-hands set of instructions.
For a novice knitter like me, much of the information found in "Stich and Bitch" and other books illustrating the primary knitting steps proved invaluable. I used a combination of the `Dummies" book and S&B to teach myself how to knit and purl. You won't find much elementary information in Singer's book, but it is interesting if you have moved beyond the Dummies book. Singer's projects appear to be created with the more skilled knitter in mind, but even if I claimed to be such a person I would not be interested in making most of them.
Rating: Summary: Redundant Review: The patterns in this book are nice, but I don't understand how "Knitty fans" can write 5 star reviews of this book--if you are a Knitty fan, then you can get over a dozen of these patterns free online! With all of the knitting books out there, it's interesting that this one was published at all, considering so much of the content that is already available for free. Count me as a big Knitty fan, but the book is redundant.
Rating: Summary: Worth the money Review: Yes, you can get many of the patterns online for free. But honestly, I recognize that the time spent on those patterns and on the site itself is not free. I am big on supporting (monetarily and otherwise) the people you believe in so that they can continue to do good work. So, I am happy to buy the book and support Amy (et al.) in a small way. And as a bonus, there are new patterns. Plus, I for one, like the stand up format a lot!
