Rating: Summary: Every house should have one Review: A freind let me use his book and now I have to get my own. It gives you information on anything you want to know. It makes things so clear. I've been sewing off and on for over twenty years and I wish I'd known about this book sooner. I feel I can make anything I want to now. I can make alterrations and feel comfortable that they are correct. I now can make the slip covers I've been wanting for a long time. Thanks Readers Digest LaVerne Till
Rating: Summary: Great book for a beginner Review: I have the FIRST edition, 1976, of this book...it is actually just as fact-filled as the new edition, and it hasn't the glitz of color through-out, though it has color plates. But, the information is great in both editions, and I urge the sewer to have this book around. I use it still for reference and refreshing the memory of things I do in sewing too seldom to remember! The new one seems devoid of the neat home projects the first edition had, and they are really retro now!!!
Rating: Summary: Good reference book Review: I know VERY little about sewing. I can get a button on and fix a few small things. I've made a few satchels for my textbooks. I bought this book to help me learn how to do something other than attach a button. I think it's a great reference book. It's very well laid out, divided into logical sections that you can easily find. There are lots of step-by-step illustrations with explanations, and there are often several techniques listed (like pockets, for example, there are several kinds it explains how to do). This book has helped me figure out several things on my own without devoting a lot of time or stuck fingers, and I am actually getting better at sewing. I like the book.
Rating: Summary: This book could replace most of my sewing library! Review: I love sewing books. My collection is about 20+ books, and this one reference contains most of the information in all of them - plus extras I've never seen anywhere else, like the 12 pages on pleating. The illustrations are clear and the text is readable and helpful. Many other sewing books are full of the author's personality and weigh heavily in favour of certain techniques. That makes them interesting reading, but it can make life difficult when all your books disagree. Instead, this book will help you choose the technique and solution that will best suit your projects, without undue prejudice. In summary, this book is not only a good reference it's a great read and is full of information from beginner to advanced. If you can only afford one sewing book, make this the one. If you already have a shelf-full of sewing books, you will still be glad you added this one.
Rating: Summary: Great illustrations for putting in zippers Review: I will admit it, I was BAD at sewing and hated it. Nevertheless I made all my clothes in high school. HOW I WISH I had this book then. This is my favorite sewing book, and although I still don't sew clothing all that well, I reach for this book anytime I need to sew something. The home furnishing section turns out to be very useful. I like sewing home items (maybe because they need not fit me and it's a lot of straight seams.) The section on pockets and zippers (a real problem for me) is very well done.
Rating: Summary: V. Useful Review: My sister gave me this book when she taught me how to sew. It has been invaluable. And even though my cat kicked it off my sewing table in an attempt to stop me from sewing and split the spine of the book so that the pages are all loose and floating around my apartment, I still use this book all the time. The explanations are well written and easy to use and the pictures are also terrific, for all you visual types. I consult this book often and swear by it. It's a good one.
Rating: Summary: Great Way to get going Review: This book not only has tips for how to sew, but how to make your own patterns for couches, or chairs. It is really a great book. I only had an old copy and When i found this one on Amazon, i had to buy a new copy. (It's that good! ) This book has all drawing, few pictures. BUT they are very CLEAR and the directions are great! I use this books as a reference to a LOT of sewing projects. It is great for those with some experience sewing, it is NOT for the beginning sewer. It is for someone who has at least stiched a few items. BUT it is a great way to get you going. Just follow the instructions step by step! Jessica :)
Rating: Summary: For the Inexperienced and the Expert! Review: This book was a requirement for me my sophomore year in college, (I was studying Fashion Design) and I haven't stopped using it! This book begins with how to organize your workspace and continuously walks you through choosing fabric, laying out a pattern, how to properly cut fabric and even how to do your own pattern alterations! It's hard to believe that four years after I first bought the book, I'm still using it but it's come in handy and virtually paid for itself in the many mistakes I've avoided. Take it from me, a person who sews frequently, this is a book that will constantly keep teaching new things.
Rating: Summary: Reference manual Review: This is an excellent reference manual; however, like most manuals these days, it becomes obsolete very quickly. It's a good book to have on hand for a beginner or someone returning to sewing after a long hiatus who never sewed that much to begin with, because it goes into just about everything - needles, threads, fabric, patterns, sewing techniques, problem solving. It is a big book, like a lot of the Readers Digest reference books, and so may end up just sitting somewhere because it is too big to leave in easy reach.
Rating: Summary: Very comprehensive Review: This is the most thorough and comprehensive of all my sewing books... I have many sewing books, but this one is the best!
