Rating: Summary: I survived Dog training...... Review: I completely forgot how difficult it was to have a puppy... My first few nights were hell until I met a girl on the street who introduced me to this phenomenal book!!!! At first I thought she was nuts. How do I have time to read with an eight-week-old puppy, I had no time to go to the bathroom and now I am being told to read a book...? Well, after another two nights of no sleeping I decided it was time to try something different. I finished the book in a few short hours with new insight and felt like I was given another chance!!! Within a few days, I was back to sleeping and my hand was no longer being used as a chew toy!!! The crate was thrown out and the wee-wee pads became history!! By ten weeks, I was on the road to a well-trained puppy. Today, at five months, I have an angel!!! She walks off the leash, ignores other dogs on the street, and looks to me for guidance. I cannot recommend this book enough!! It was a lifesaver and allowed me to have a new best friend!!
Rating: Summary: A Must-Read Review: I wished I read this book BEFORE I adopted my Shar Pei/Pit Bull, Molly. It also would have saved me a lot of money on the other books I purchased before "Smarter than you Think." Although, I do not agree with all of the techniques, most of the things make a lot of sense, and I already see a difference in Molly's attitude. I highly recommend this book to all dog owners!
Rating: Summary: Did You People Even Read It or just Assume? Review: Reading through the reviews, here is the best way I can describe it.Yes he is Cocky (why wouldn't he be he is very successful with his method) Yes he says throw things However he NEVER SAYS HURT YOUR DOG. If throwing a pair of socks, or a rolled up washcloth taped in the middle (as I used) ruins your relationship with your dog, I would suggest you have a bigger issues to overcome. Within 10 minutes, I had my 5 month old Boxer coming to me 100% inside the house, and withing days 100% outside. He mentions swatting your dog, NOT BEATING as many of you suggest. He makes it clear, your dog relies on you for EVERYTHING it needs. If you are providing it you will have little trouble getting your dog to act as you choose, if you are not, then your dog will show you in its own way that you are lacking. Everyone I have shared this with has been amazed with the results.
Rating: Summary: This book was a Life-Saver!!!!!!! Must READ!!!!!!! Review: Smarter Than you Think was the best dog-training book I've ever read!!!! Finally, something made sense!!!!! The author discusses the way dogs think instead of teaching how to give commands. I have two dogs- 3 and 4 yrs. old- and I thought a training book would be hopeless at this stage of the game. But we tried everyting else already- all the classes and private trainers who used treats and one word commands to train my dogs. When the trainers and treats were gone, my dogs went back to the way they were! THIS BOOK changed everything for us!!!!!! The dogs learned to listen to me first- who knew it was that simple!!!!! Now, they work around my lifestyle and I can enjoy them so much more... I can't possible recommend any dog training book more- this is a totally revolutionary approach and it worked- no frills- no more classes- no more dog crates- no more frustration. The author makes a lot of new points that haven't been made before and he gives you a lot to think about. It's really a philosophy more than anything else. If you are looking for a training book- this is the best one out there (Trust me- I tried most of the others!).
Rating: Summary: Fast and easy, this book changed my life! Review: This book is amazing. I was blown away by how fast Paul Loeb and Suzanne Hlavacek's methods worked. I never thought training a dog could be so easy and humane. These professionals really know and care about animals. I have three dogs and each of them was brought up with their methods. I could take them anywhere and everyone is amazed at how well behaved my dogs are. When I adopted my first dog, everyone I spoke with had an opinion on training a dog. From feeding him dried food for his teeth, to crating. How wrong they all were. I have learned from this book that the best way to bring up a healthy and happy dog is to use these methods and my own good sense. The book is written in an easy to read and understand format. The stories they use to illustrate the way to handle your dog are adorable. Because I have used these techniques, I have had and continue to have a wonderful loving relationship with all my dogs; they are part of the family. I only wish I could use this method on my husband!
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: This book was awesome! At first I disagreed with some things, but then I realized how right these things were, and how well it would work! I was majorly impressed with this knew way of thinking, with emphasis on some old ways. This is my new dog bible!
Rating: Summary: the best dog training book I ever read Review: When I announced I was getting a dog, someone told me that I MUST get this book, that they saw Paul Loeb on Dateline NBC and he is amazing. I did buy Smarter Than You Think, and it has become my bible! After reading this book, you just can't believe that there is any other way of training a dog. It makes such perfect sense, and it is so easy. I have a 12 week old dog, who is TRAINED!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is getting or owns a pet.
Rating: Summary: A VERY DUMB DUMB STATEMENT! Review: When I bought this book, I thought it was going to be another run of the mill training book with a few personal "training twists". Wow was I surprised. This book starts of saying to forget everything you've ever learned about training your dog, because his way is the best way, and should be the only way. He sounds extremely arrogant and condescending, as if everyone reading this book is a 10 year old child, and he needs to explain it so very simply so we with our small minds will understand. It takes him two chapters to even mention what his training philosophy is, as if he needed to "convince" you that his training method is good, before telling you what it is. His logic is inconsistent. He compares children to dogs, saying what is not good for a child should not be good for a dog. Well his method is you throw something at your dog, have it hit the dog, and the dog will magically come to you. I would never throw something at a child to get it's attention, nor will I throw something at my dog unless we're playing with a tennis ball and he's going to catch it in his mouth. He also goes on to say that you should speak in sentances to your dog. Dogs do NOT understand human language. They under stand action and reaction, cause and consequence. If you say "sit down" to a dog, does not hear two words, he hears "sitdown". He says that one word commands are ineffective, but does not continue to give a reasonable reason why. He also says not to practice, and having the dog do it once is enough for them to learn, even if you are holding them and place them into position. Well if someone holds my hands to show me how to golf, I did not LEARN how to golf, I am getting there. He then goes on to say that you should say the command, and if he doesn't do it, force him to. Well if you had taken to time to actually teach the dog the command, you would not be forced to shove him into position. My dog is submissive. If I were to grab his collar and shove him into position and drag him around when I commanded him to do something, he would no longer trust me. But according to the author, this is an "excuse". No, this is not an excuse, this is part of my dog's personality. Just like kids, some things work for some dogs, and not with others.
Rating: Summary: Positives and Negictives... Review: You must read this book if you are giving any thought at all to getting a dog. It should be included with every dog adoption or purchase.
I adopted a 9-month shih Tzu, who was referred to by the owners Dad as "That AWFUL dog!!!!" After reading this book, I am pleased to tell you that not only was I thoroughly entertained by thieir witty writing style, I am also now the proud owner of really wonderful, sweet dog. I constantly receive compliments for my dogs great behavior. It is due to this book and Paul & Suzanne's wonderful approach to dogs.
If you own a dog, or are thinking of owning a dog, reading this book is a MUST!!!!.
I can never thank them enough for their guidance and genius!!!
