Rating: Summary: Excellent Intro to Showing Review: I've read just about every book on showing, and this is the best introduction to the world of dog shows I've seen. I wish more exhibitors shared Caroline Coile's wonderful attitude about showing dogs. She covers everything from finding and raising that show quality puppy, basic stacking and gaiting (with helpful color photographs), entering shows and what to do when you get there, and problem solving techniques, to good sportsmanship and suggestions on how to avoid common pitfalls. And she does it all with a great sense of humor -- an important quality to have when you're showing dogs!
Rating: Summary: A Great Beginning Attitude Review: Ms. Coile did a wonderful job for the beginner to the world of show. Not only did she mention what to do, she highlighted a lot of common mistakes with pictures for illustrations. One of the greatest aspects of this book was the attitude of upbeat, make sure you enjoy the shows and don't become petty. After reading this book you understand more what the judge is wanting to see and I was more able to handle the dog and place her better in the ring.
Rating: Summary: This book is a gem! Review: Ms. Coile does a wonderful job of explaining all the important elements in showing a dog. It isn't the first book I've read on the subject but it is the best. It is clear and comprehensive and provides wonderful illustrations--finally, a visual of the various patterns (down & back, the L, the triange!) and an explanation of "pacing" versus "trotting." A wealth of information at small cost! Our bouvier is on his way...
Rating: Summary: Excellent resource for novice Review: Nice work. The conformation handler will appreciate all the details provided by the author. If you want to read a book of dog showing but you are not a handler yourself don't buy this one, you'll be bored. But it is a great book for the beginer handler. You'll thank the author for all the info not available anywhere else and certanly not from any of the competitors in the ring. Good preparatory book.
Rating: Summary: DogRead book of the month Review: This book was chose to be on the prestigious 'DogRead' as a book selection of the month. We only do 12 books a year and this was September 2001. The author comes on line for the whole month to answer questions on the book. It was very well received by our 3000 member email group. The author was very knowledgeable and easy to understand even though also very in depth.treshell owner DogRead http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DogRead
Rating: Summary: The BEST Book I've Read Yet! Review: This is a fantastic book for the owner-handler competing against the professionals! It helps out the novice as well by explaining dog shows. However, I've been in dog shows since I was young and needed a book for the next level. This was perfect! There were so many hints, tips and techniques that I had never heard of. There were hints on training your dog, using your dog's best assets, handler techiniques etc. I couldn't put the book down! This book needs to be in every dog showers library.
Rating: Summary: The Best Handling Guide Ever Review: This is a great book! It has really helped me. I am a Junior Handler in shows, but I don't yet have a dog, so I show other peoples dogs. I really enjoyed reading this book. It has so many helpful tips and pointers. I read it before I go to bed, and I also practice my ring procedures with a stuffed dog. This book has done so much for me. So, if you are new to dog shows, like I am, this is definately the book for you. I would recomend this to newcomers, like myself. After reading this, I attended my 5th show. I came in first and that was all I needed to make it to the Junior Nationals, where I placed first. Read this book. If it can help me, it can help you too!
Rating: Summary: Show Me! : A Dog Showing Primer Review: This is an excellent primer for the novice dog exhibitor. If you want to get involved in showing dogs, I recommend you start with this book. It is written so both the younger handler and adult will find it useful. The basics are well covered, and there is additional information on how to solve some of the problems that may occur in the show ring. Overall, it is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Eminently readable, enjoyable introduction to showing dogs Review: Though I'm not likely to become a breeder or exhibitor, I've attended a half-dozen shows in the past six months in order to follow a particular breed. More puzzled than enlightened, I soon found that I needed to find out what all this activity was about. This book has answered many of my questions in a serious-minded yet easy-to-read style, and it is a keeper for my library - just in case I get bit by the show bug. There are certain tricks of the trade that the beginner should watch out for, as in any pursuit, as well as accepted procedures and proper etiquette, which too many beginners learn only by trial and error. An eye-opener of a book, and just plain fun for anyone who loves dogs.
