Summary: A Fun Book for You and Your Dog
Review: Dog Tricks contains a vast selection of practical and fun dog tricks. The book starts out with a simple trick: wag your tail. Although almost any dog will wag its tail when asked in a certain "the human is paying attention to me" tone, this first trick serves to build your confidence, as well as your dogs, and to educate you about how your dog learns. The beginning of the book focuses on your dog's individual personality. Dogs react instinctively to the world with four drives- Prey, Pack and Defense/Fight and Defense/Flight. These are the natural talents of our dogs, and the dog's personality will be a mix of these four drives. The book includes a short canine personality test that will show you how much of each drive your dog posses. Each trick states which drive(s) it entails. You can start with tricks that involve the dominant drive in your dog. Once you have mastered a few tricks your confidence goes up, your dog learns it is fun to do tricks with you, and you both learn how to better communicate with each other. Often, people start training their dog by trying to teach them a trick that the dogs natural ability does not promote (e.g. fetching to a dog with a low prey drive), this book will go a long way towards making the beginning of your dogs training go smoothly. Each trick has clear step-by-step instructions, as well as possible modifications. The full color artwork makes the book fun to read. The color photos clarify the methods described in the text. The author stresses positive reinforcement through voice, touching and food rather than corrective training (in contrast to the Haggerty/Benjamin books). Basic training such as sit, stay, wait, and down are included- but this is not intended to be a training book for your dog, try How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend for a text on basic training and behavior. With 37 tricks, including classics, such as resting biscuits on the dogs nose, and useful ones, like finding your keys (I'm working on teaching my dog "where's the remote?"), this book will keep you and your pooch busy for a good time to come.

Review: I first read Captain Haggerty and CArol Benjamin's Dog Tricks TeachingYour Dog to be Useful, Fun and Entertaining and I then found this book which I did not think was as comprehensive as the Haggerty book, although it was a nice little book. In fact, I felt like with some tricks in this book they were coming straight from Haggety's book. The Haggerty book has a LOT more tricks too and are easier to follow. That is a classic.
