Summary: You'll Flip Over This Easy Technique!
Review: Here are some excerpts from my review of this book. You can see the complete review on the Quilter's Review website.

"Every once in a while I read a book that inspires me to put aside all my works in progress to start something completely new. This is one of those books....

"Stitch 'n Flip combines techniques of paper piecing and log cabin. But it is easier than paper piecing in several ways. Instead of paper, Stitch 'n Flip uses a muslin foundation that becomes a permanent part of the quilt, so you don't have to tear out all the paper after sewing and assembly....

"Like the log cabin block, the center piece determines the next piece to be attached, so the pieces are assembled clockwise or counterclockwise around the center piece. The difference is that the center piece is not always square. Because of this difference, each quilt you make using this technique can look completely different....

"If you want to try something different, try this new, easy method and produce a quilt that looks much harder to make than it is. Check out Valori Wells' Stitch 'n Flip!"

Summary: Outside the box
Review: If paper piecing is your thing, this will take you down the garden path and into the woods with complex, freeform designs. Reminiscent of the style of Ruth McDowell, these flowers and leaves are all set in projects for you to use, but they could just as easily be arranged to create one of a kind works of your own devising. This is not a book for rank beginners, but will help the intermediate paper piecer try their wings.

Summary: Lavender blue dilly dilly...
Review: If you are as flipped out about lavender, mauve, and shades of purple as I am, and love pansies and lavender, the STITCH AND FLIP QUILTS may be for you. Valorie Wells includes several chapters (14 projects) and each chapter is devoted to making a specific quilt. She advises you as to what materials you will need, how to prepare the materials (cutting the appropriate sized pieces), how to arrange the materials (blocking), and how to sew the pieces together on a sewing machine. A teenage girl could make these quilts.

Stitch and flip involves sewing pieces of precut material together, and then flipping the joined piece so that the seam is hidden and then sewing another piece to the joined first piece and sew on. Wells has provided the creative design and you assemble it. She provides some information about attaching the quilt cover to a backing and topstitiching the ensemble, but it would probably help if you know how to do this or have another book that helps you work through the assembly steps.

Each of the quilt designs includes a fabric color selection, but if you are imaginative you can make other choices. It's difficult for me to visualize the "pansy" design without purple but these days anything goes. Wells provides a list of material sources including email addresses.

Summary: Total Inspiration!!!
Review: If you are looking for a non-traditional quilting technique, this is it. I have not been able to put this book down since I found it. I have 3 different quilts started because of it. I was inspired to follow my own imagination and creativity. The technique takes maybe 15 minutes to learn and then, you're off. I simply love this book.
