Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Geared toward kids but good for all beginners
Review: As a twenty-something who wanted to learn to sew, I asked an experienced sewer for a good starter book. She handed me this one. Nancy Zieman (of PBS's Sewing with Nancy) originally wrote this book for use in 4H programs, so fitting instructions are geared toward young people's sizes. (Both boys and girls size charts are shown, and there are boys and girls on the cover. Extra points for not being sexist!)

But this book is just as valuable for adults who want to learn to sew, especially if they're trying to do it solo. You'll learn all the basics: pattern selection, basic machine operation, and stitching. There's also a brief introduction to sergers. This is a good little guide that you'll want to turn to time and again.
