Rating: Summary: Idiot's Guide to Choosing, Training and Raising A Dog Review: Four years ago, I raised my foundling pup-dog on this book. Phantom is now 84 pounds, 30 + inches high, canine of unknown heritage. He is an extremly good natured Certified Therapy Dog, champion agility dog, and number one single disc dog in the world. Of course, this is not the only book I used to raise my dog, but I do recommend it for first (beginning) dog owners. I never noticed the ads, that other reviewers, are so upset about, or the use of binanca - which I do not advocate. But considering that Phantom is really my first attempt at dog training, his behavior is much better than the average dog. So I must have done something right.
Rating: Summary: Enhances dog-person communication Review: I have read countless books, internet articles and magazine articles on dog training. This book encapsulates everything I've read in a humane, easy to understand manner. She does refer to her products but always suggests ways of 'making your own' if you don't want to buy hers. Her understanding of dog communication and psychology has been spot on with our puppy and the dog we are looking after for friends. I discard that which I do not agree with (eg mouth spray on the nose and devising a teaching lead) but have found so much useful information that I believe it is worth buying. Loving leadership is what she promotes. And for us, that has produced amazing results.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic for those thinking about or having just adopted Review: I raised my dog Idaho on the principles set out in this book. Training was a snap, and I have Sarah Hodgson to thank for that. A good deal of dog ownership is heeled on the fear of having to train or properly housebreak your new family member. Sarah's book reads in lamens terms and obliterates any fear whatsoever. I can't imagine where I would be without having first read this book before I met Idaho. A definite MUST-HAVE for any dog owner.By the way, I did not notice any blatant advertising in this book or self-serving anecdotes on Sarah's part.

Rating: Summary: Not great, but not bad either... Review: Like most of the other folks who have reviewed this book, I also did not particularly appreciate the use of the book as a platform for selling special leashes. However, it is a decent general book that covers the basics pretty well in an easy-to-read format. I did learn a lot from the chapter on puppy personality and how to choose a puppy with a temperament you can live with and know how to handle appropriately. And there are some good ideas for training, but some are too strict for my tastes. My best luck so far has come from reading several training books to see how different experts handle the same situation, and then pick the method I think will work best for me and my dog. I just didn't pick as many from this book.
Rating: Summary: Useless Review: Save yourself some money and don't buy this book. I purchased this book in order to help choose the right dog for me and my wife, but this book was completely useless. Breed descriptions are extremely vauge and most of the book is an infomercial for her products. Worse yet, in orer to find out what dog is right for you, she wants you to send her back a questionair and thirty dollars. Possibly the worst book I ever purchased.
Rating: Summary: Useless Review: This is a very good book for dog owners of all ages and for even those who think they already know how to train their dogs!! Training a dog is not always easy, and it is never the same for each dog, like children they all learn differently. And nobody, not even the experts know it all. This book is easy to understnad and follow, with very simple steps for training your furkid!
Rating: Summary: Is it a book or an ad???? Review: This woman is appalling!!!!! As you can see from the title, the book is for people who never had a dog, so you are insecure and kind of ignorant on the subject. You need to trust someone, in this case, the author. But after some pages what do you find??? That she?s using this book to sell her own line of dog leashes and other stuff. What a horrible thing to do!!!!!!! I inmediately put the book down. I don?t need to be told that my puppy will only be happy and obedient if I use her products.
