Rating: Summary: Beware - Written by a Contractor's Wife! Review: This book has some good basic information, but it's all presented in a very biased manner. Biased in favor of the contractor, that is. Not surprising, since this book was written by the wife of a contractor. You really have to ignore much of the advice in this book -- it often seems like the point of the book is to teach homeowners how to be docile pawns of the contractor and not cause him problems. Take this example, from a section that tells how you shouldn't inspect the work while the workers are in the house: "You don't want to alienate your contractor by poking around suspiciously, officiously, and obessively during working hours, getting in the way, asking unnecessary questions, and acting as though you're smarter than everyone else." This is bad advice -- every contractor makes mistakes, and catching them promptly is the best way to get them fixed.
Rating: Summary: Take Charge of Your Home Renovation Review: This well organized "how to" guide is clearly written and provides practical advice. The job of preparing for a major home renovation project is overwhelming. The author lays out a systematic, practical approach to the task and provides references for additional help. I found the advice sound and easy to follow. The book answered many questions and prevented problems in completing a large construction project.
