Children's quilts need not simply be scaled-down grown-ups' quilts, and an older kid will certainly want something that doesn't look like a baby quilt. With this in mind, Elaine Hammond has divided her projects into age ranges so quilters can chose the appropriate design based on the recipient's age. Several of the quilts are dimensional and interactive, with removable stuffed animals, soft chess pieces, and the like. Although some of Hammond's designs are clever, many are pretty standard and her colors are often muddy or washed out, which seemingly defeats her stated purpose of tailoring a quilt to suit a child's tastes. Still, with its fairly thorough directions, full templates, and occasionally unique ideas, the book may have appeal to quilters whose target audience is infant to preteen, particularly if they follow Hammond's advice to choose fabrics with the children in mind or even get them involved in fabric selection--advice that she herself should have followed more often. --Amy Handy
