Description:

Real stained glass is glorious--and terribly expensive. (Yes, you can construct your own, but it requires advanced cutting and soldering techniques, not to mention costly materials.) With translucent glass paint, however, a simulated stained-glass look is now possible, and the effect is a pretty decent imitation of the real thing. Plaid's "Gallery Glass" is the industry leader and is available at almost any craft store for minimal investment. By tracing pattern outlines with simulated liquid leading and filling in the design with some of the 24 window colors, anyone can give their windows, glass doors, and home accessories the appearance of stained glass. Plaid's own book on the subject offers good directions and photos and complete patterns. Though the smaller items (suncatchers, night lights, candlestands) tend toward the cutesy, the large-scale window designs are often restrained and sophisticated. Some practice is required to achieve a professional look, but the basic methods are quite easily learned. --Amy Handy
