This small (96 page) book is, nonetheless, comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, and--like all Sunset Books how-to publications--well organized, thorough, and written in clear language with a useful index. It has enough information about furniture finishing, varieties of wood, and finishing techniques, hints, and advice for a rank amateur to jump into furniture finishing with enthusiasm and not mess up. Or, at least not much! I thought I knew my way around a can of polyurethane, but there were tips and background information that were news to me, and they will be quite useful for future projects. I now know why that old dresser I refinished looks so tacky, and, more importantly, I know how to fix it now.
