Rating: Summary: Earthen Wonders Review: Earthen Wonders by Carolyn M. Bardos is an extraordinary book. The author put out a call for entries and before she received a single response, decided to publish every slide that turned up in her mailbox. The result is not only a non-elitist look at art and book publishing--but the collection of work is astounding. Some of the art represented is by people who have never exhibited. Not only is this book refreshing, as so many ceramic publications feature the same artists repeatedly, but it also shows how people--not famous people--make art. Most of the book is devoted to large color reproductions and the text toward the back, delves into salient issues effecting the artists' work and life. Finally, this book is a is wonderful respite from the common American crafts-fair aesthetic. Earthen Wonders is a rare treasure and a real bargain for the price!
Rating: Summary: Earthen Wonders -- A Beautiful Experience Review: Every once in a while you come across a book that touches you on many different levels. When the aesthetics of the physical book matches the content, and brings about a spiritual experience. Earthen Wonders is such a book for me. Poetry, prose, and pottery paint a unique balance of competence and compassion through which the author brings the works and words of these artists -- the Hungarian experience -- close to us. It is an added pleasure to be able to read the words both in English and Hungarian. This book is an excellent gift to anybody who appreciates beauty in its complexity.
Rating: Summary: Each page is a new pleasure... Review: I received this book as a gift and was so impressed that it has become my gift of choice for the last several months. From my relatives who make their living as artists to friends and co-workers; the response has been dynamic. I've never before given a gift that has absolutely guaranteed a response. I've gotten phone calls and notes raving about this special work. Reading this book, I felt like I was getting a real lesson in Hungarian life. Nestled among the incredible photographs of some of the most breathtaking pottery I've ever seen; are poetry and stories, which touched my heart and made me feel glad to be a part of this large, diverse world. This book is a must have for history lovers and artists. It's for anyone who appreciates beauty.
Rating: Summary: Refreshing Review: Refreshing to find an author who is comfortable in being different;she lets the artists speak about their passion. No formula here, just an ecclectic collection of beautiful ceramics.

Rating: Summary: Beautiful Book Review: This book in itself is a work of art. As busy mom, I find it so relaxing to sit with this book after the kids are in bed and just let the beautiful photographs and interesting interviews take me away to another place!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Book, the next best thing to having the ceramics! Review: This book is not just a visual overview of Hungarian ceramic artists, it is a work of art in itself. Combining unique, beautiful, powerful pottery designs with poetry and tastefully chosen backdrops, the ceramics work leaps out of the page at you, alive, three dimensional, and remarkably human. I just wish I could have the ceramics themselves, in my house, but for now the book will do.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book Review: This is a wonderful book! The bulk is beautiful photographs of ceramic creations, very nicely laid out. The really unique piece is the end of the book which has interviews with the artists (and some photos of them working). This really lets you get to know the artists, and makes looking at the pictures so much more meaningful. Bardos did a lot of other nice things with the book - like having all the text in both English and Hungarian (I don't speak Hungarian, but as real texture to the book), and some poems sprinkled here and there. A real treasure!
