Rating: Summary: A User Friendly Gardening Guide Review: After years of trial and error gardening that's hard on the back as well as the budget, I welcome this practical guide that tells me as much or as little as I want to know. I like the author's conversational, neighbor to neighbor style. And she presents the reader with regular bouquets of gardening tips from experienced friends and professionals, specific ways to make gardening easier and more pleasant for both the gardener and the plants. Using the book's helpful calendar month organization, I easily found instructions on how and when to prune my Crape Myrtle -- and the mistakes to avoid. In the accompanying table, I found its height, flower color, trunk color, and fall color. Whether she's discussing Monet's garden, her garden, or mine, I like the wit and humor with which the author explains "rose rustlers" and "passalong plants" and "xeriscaping". Her guidance in how to choose the right plant for the right place will help any gardener eliminate landscaping disappointments. And I especially welcome her "southern fried" section on how both gardeners and plants can beat the heat. This book is fun to read, easy to use, and my new gardening companion.

Rating: Summary: A gardening classic! Review: Clippings from Orene's Garden is an exceptional book that combines practical, how-to gardening information with beautifully written descriptions of plants and gardens. The reader is led, month by month, through a gardener's year by an insightful Southern master gardener. The information on planning and planting a garden is extensive, covering design, layout, plant selection, soil preparation, composting, and maintenance from all perspectives -- aesthetic to scientific! This book stands out from other gardening books because of the wonderful writing style of the author. Reading Clippings is like having a wonderful series of conversations with a close friend who shares everything you've ever wanted to know about gardening. The December chapter, with suggestions of holiday decorating from the garden and a wonderful gift list of must-have gardening equipment, is a real bonus. In addition to being a highly readable volume, the index and bibliography make it a useful reference book.
Rating: Summary: Practical gardening tips Review: For someone, like me, who does little gardening, Orene's book is a helpful guide in giving practical gardening tips.....some even in step-by-step instructions. In reading this book, the gardening ideas were written in layman's terms....easy to understand concepts. I appreciate Orene's added wisdom and humor pertaining to life and to the garden. Having known Orene for over thirty years, reading this book gave me a new appreciation for the depth and passion she had for gardening.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful layman's guide to gardening! Review: It's in my blood but I never appreciated what gardening meant to my mother and her mother until reading "Clippings." The "open letter" at the end sums it up. I have been a homeowner for 30 years and searched for a practical guide to gardening. This book provides a layman's perspective--enough detail to understand pansies, crape myrtles, camellias, azaleas, etc. but not be overwhelmed--there are references if you want that. Orene's style is that of a patient mother teaching an eager leaner. I appreciate that and recommend "Clippings" to my fellow weekend "gardening" warriors.
Rating: Summary: Orene's Garden Review: It's March and I just finished the April section of Clippings from Orene's Garden. I am astounded at the wealth of information! The flowering trees and shrubs and vines that are available for the South Carolina yard are described in color, foliage, and scent and include the names both local and Latin. There is practical advice on perennials and annuals: where to plant them; how to prepare the soil; how to show them off in containers or beds, in masses for traffic-stopping color, or even between rows in a vegetable garden. Perhaps the biggest delight for me was the section on tomatoes. The directions and suggestions here have given me the courage to try (after I find some sun in my much-shaded yard.) I was interested to read her sister Betty's method and am already thinking of people who might let me "raid" their pastures. This is a fabulous book, and Orene was a gardener of rare ability and generosity. For years to come this book will inspire us to plan and dream and then rush to our nearest garden center.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT REFERENCE Review: Orene Horton's wise advice works for beginners and experts alike. She obviously loved her gardening and sharing that feeling with others. This is a book that can be read straight through and then kept as a continuing reference.
