Rating: Summary: Campbell can be an inspiration with her poetic insights Review: I found it difficult to get interested in this novel, but eventually, I became aware of what the author was attempting -- this happened as a result of reading through a rather laconic beginning to get to know the novel's central characters and actually caring about their destinies. The miracles that Maxine works are a bit too incredulous, but nonetheless desirable. If only life's many problems were as promptly solved! However, the emphasis on humanity made this book a winner. Our money and power driven society really needs the passion for humanity that Campbell's characters possess. Bless her for it.
Rating: Summary: I WAS DISAPPOINTED. Review: I found that this book did start slow as others who reviewed it have said. I was very disappointed by the predictability of the storyline and the rush for the PICTURE PERFECT HAPPY ENDING. Ugh! The relationships were not quite believable or superficial.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I have read all of Bebe's books and enjoyed them immensely. However, this book just plodded along and never really brought out the characters. I still love her writing though and will look forward to the next book, unfortunately this one was a sleeper not a keeper.
Rating: Summary: NOT VERY REALISTIC. Review: I HAVE READ BEBE'S OTHER NOVELS GREATLY WRITTEN I JUST COULD NOT GET INTO THIS BOOK MAXINE WAS NOT PORTRAYING A VERY REALISTIC ROLL I DID NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT SHE WAS TRYING TO FORGIVE HER HUSBAND BUT NOT REALLY FORGIVEN HIM (FOR HIS INFIDELITY) OR HER TRYING TO HELP HER DRUNK GRANDMA COME ON SHE WAS NOT SUPERWOMAN AND BEBE COULD NOT MAKE UP HER MIND EITHER SHE WANTED HER TO BE SUPERWOMAN OR SHE DIDN'T NOT INTERESTING AT ALL.
Rating: Summary: SLEEPER! Review: I have to agree with many of the other reviews out there on this one. It is definately a sleeper not a keeper. It starts out good, but then it just sort of goes nowhere. I am deeply disappointed after reading Brothers and Sisters. Maxine's grandmother was getting on my nerves and it was almost tiring to wait for her to come to her senses. While it wasn't, by far, the worst I have read, it is nothing that I would recommend.
Rating: Summary: A Heartwarming Read Review: I LOVE Bebe Moore Campbell. She is among my top 10 favorite female authors. I rushed to the bookstore when I heard this book came out and I wasn't disappointed. I must say, however, that I really had to struggle through the first 50-75 pages because nothing really "happened" in the beginning -- Ms. Campbell took too long setting up the characters and plot. But I'm glad I held on because it is a beautiful story about love, family ties, honesty, and dealing with life one day at a time. Maxine is a remarkable, brave woman. The storyline was a BIT predictable (I think because of the title!) and some of the characters were not as developed as her characters usually are. But Lindy was so real I felt like I knew her. But I wanted more info. on Satchel and his childhood. And I really wanted to know more about his affair with Sheila. Why did he do it? (Besides the obvious!) What was going on in his marriage to Maxine that caused him to stray? I also wanted to know more about Maxine's mother Millicent and her relationship with Lindy. BUT..you can't have everything and on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed the book once it got going. A must read for Camplbell fans!!! And hang on...it gets GREAT!
Rating: Summary: I hear you loud and clear in the comeback choir. Review: I loved the story of Maxine and Satchel struggling to regain the intimacy they had lost because of his infidelity. I loved the touches Ms. Campbell used to have Maxine talk to her private parts. I also enjoyed the relationship of Maxine and her grandmother Lindy, a well-known singer. Ms. Campbell's message of its "never too late", applied to her marriage, her old community and her grandmother's singing career. A great read.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: I loved this book because there's something in it for everyone. The struggle to let go of baggage that's holding you back; the struggle to support aging loved ones without controlling them; and the struggle to follow your heart (which may not always coincide with your bank account). It was great!
Rating: Summary: A good, but not great read Review: I really love Bebe Moore Campbell's writing; but I wasn't as impressed with this one. It started out with a lot of potential, but seemingly came up short. I kept expecting something major to be revealed about Millicent, but it never came about. I think Millicent was a more important character than she was made to be.
Rating: Summary: An excellent and fast read Review: I tend to read more thriller and suspense. Once in a while I change over for a little more depth. This was not too involved but gave me a real nice lift. I was quite impressed. Bebe's book are all great so far. Thank you Bebe...
