Rating: Summary: A brilliant send-up of American pop culture Review: "Red Meat Cures Cancer" is an instant classic in the field of novels dealing with American pop culture. In the context of an executive of a fringe player in the fast food industry, O'Dwyer discusses many themes that are prevalent in contemporary American pop culture. In fact, O'Dwyer carefully portrays the ethical dilemmas his protagonist faces in his quest for achieving the American dream. Through the course of the novel, his protagonist has to learn that it is not only the ends, but also the means one employs, that determine one's ultimate happiness. Furthermore, O'Dwyer demonstrates just how pervasive sexual allusions have become in marketing experts' efforts to sell products. Politics, lobbyism, and activism are shown to be dirty businesses governed by people's desire to succeed in the race of life - at almost any cost. The gap between good and bad is thus narrowing. The context of the fast food industry proves to be highly relevant given the current lawsuits against McDonald's. O'Dwyer very eloquently guides his readers through the novel, which is not surprising given his academic pedigree (Princeton, Oxford, Cornell). In the end, his message seems hopeful: start doing the "right" thing now. You might want to do the same and pick up a copy. Indeed, you don't want to miss out on this "wildly irreverent and wickedly funny romp through the lunatic fringe of American pop culture and the fast food industry" [T. Hummel, Rolling Stone Magazine].
Rating: Summary: O'Dwyer is a modern-day Voltaire! Review: "Red Meat Cures Cancer" is a hysterical, extremely well-written commentary on modern American society. Like Voltaire, O'Dwyer not only paints an accurate portrait of current society, but he has also managed to add a touch of philosophy to this marvelous work without making it too difficult to digest or too much like a sermon (pun intended). If you like reference comedy, you'll love "Red Meat Cures Cancer." O'Dwyer satirical look at our world is enthralling, and I recognized people I know or with whom I am familiar in each character. I loved the book, and I recommend "Red Meat Cures Cancer" without reservation.

Rating: Summary: Kirkus gives "Red Meat" a rave review - Review: A meaty, bloody slab o'satire.
O'Dwyer knows that subtlety is not the way to play this (satire) and so paints RED MEAT CURES CANCER with broad, primary strokes burnished with a healthy dose of ribaldry.
Like Christopher Buckley with the subtlety, O'Dwyer's first vaults over any ideas of good taste in a realm of deep-fired comic genius.
Rating: Summary: Are you kidding? Review: I do not understand the positive reviews of this book. I saw it on display in a bookstore, the first couple of pages made me laugh, and so I picked it up. It was all downhill from there. There isn't much humor, the characters are too much, the silly names are distracting, and the main character's attack of conscience was painful.

Rating: Summary: Laughing at the news Review: I thought I was the only one laughing at the news headlines - fast food lawsuits?!?! Starbuck O'Dwyer's satire on the fast food industry is by far the most creative and hilarious book I have EVER read and it came out at a great time! The characters and plot in Red Meat Cures Cancer will keep anyone turning the pages as fast as they can while in hysterics! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to dust off their own creativity and get a laugh out of fast food!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the funniest satiresince Hiaasen and Buckley Review: I was rolling in my seat when I read Red Meat Cures Cancer. The idea of a 300 fat gram tailburger and all the other characters in the book is great. The audacity of the King of Tailburger is great and they market to low-lifes, prison, and people with a drug problem. The way the media is distorted and dialogue crackles. It is an alternate universe and was absolutely hilarious to me - a fan of all satire like Hiassen and Buckley's thank you for Smoking. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You will be laughing with tears running down your face if you really think about the subject. Andy G.
