Summary: The Lovely Bones
Review: I thought that "The Lovely Bones" was the best book I have read in quite some time. It is absolutely haunting, the characters and the story will stay with you long after you finish the book. The horror of Susie's death is conveyed, but without grisly details, and you feel the sadness of Susie and her family as they deal with her murder, and with life without her. It was beautifully written. I loved it.

Review: Lovely Bones is without a doubt the best novel I have ever read. The characters, plot, the time-line, and the ending is written so well. You actually feel the emotions as you read this story. I would highly suggest this novel for anyone looking for a different take on reading about something as brutual as murder, rape, and deception and finding meaning in the story surrounding this family. A truly excellent read!!!

Summary: A wonderful book!!
Review: This is the best book I have read in a long time. It is well written and interesting from the first line. You fall in love with the main characters immediately. You cheer for them, hurt for them, and worry for them. This book will make you laugh and cry. I highly recommend it and can't wait to see what Alice Sebold with produce next.

Review: This book was everything I hoped and more, reading it really was an experience that I wanted to continue long after the last page. Susie Salmon will be someone I think of often and The Lovely Bones will be a book that I will read again in my lifetime.

Summary: Clever idea, but didn't sustain it.
Review: I give Alice Sebold high marks for originality; the idea of the story being told by the girl murdered in chapter one is clever. Unfortunately, though, the unfolding story fell far short of the hype - and became totally ridiculous when Susie came back to earth. Had Sebold focused on the hunt for the murderer it could have been much more interesting.

Summary: Tough Subject...Incredible Language
Review: Isn't it interesting that the majority of the readers who "dis" a book never give their names?So many challenging, excellent books are about difficult subjects and this one is close to perfection. For those that appreciated the "dead soul" viewpoint, I would like to recommend "A Blessing on the Moon" by Joseph Skibell, it's equally as provocative as Ms. Sebold's latest novel...don't miss it.

Summary: A lovely novel spoken from the dead
Review: This is an easy-reading book that explores the first person view of the 14 year old murdered victim, Suzy. I recommend this book for those who ever wonder what the dead thought about the living after the impact of his or her death and the years afterwards. Also, wonders what really happened to the girls who are missing or murdered (How was the crime committed?). I thought this book had a unique point of view of writing. This book kept me reading and was a bit shocking in the end. At the end, there's a sense of closure and healing of Suzy's family.

Summary: Uneven
Review: After reading the reviews accompanying the book's release, I was very excited, expecting to find "These Lovely Bones" not only entertaining, but a good literary novel. While certain aspects were well done -- Sebold is both a reasonably good writer and writes creatively and compellingly about Susie's experiences in heaven -- the book succeeds only for the first half. After setting up the characters and their relationships, Sebold apparently doesn't know what to do with them. While the point of the book is the characters' growth in the wake of the tragedy that begins the book, the story peaks and then falters, unable to progress past the arc toward an effective resolution of both themes and plot. The ending is appalling. Even apart from the horrific "Ghost"-like chapter near the end, the book's "happily ever after" ending feels false, especially when compared to the refreshing lack of formula employed in the set-up. If only the creativity and authenticity of the first half could have been sustained, what a novel it would have been. I remain hopeful that Sebold may have such a novel in her. Maybe next time.
