Rating: Summary: A Most Lovely Book Review: "The Lovely Bones" is one of those rare books that stays with you. It's hard to move on to the next book on your reading list once you close the book on Susie Salmon. I don't think anyone can review this book with words that can describe how beautiful, affecting, and thought-provoking it was for me. The murder of a child is horrific, but the sensitivity with which Ms. Sebold crafts the aftermath of the event from the eyes of the child in her heaven takes some of the sting out. She shows us that hope lives on, on earth, as well as in heaven. You will not regret reading this book--kudos, Ms. Sebold.
Rating: Summary: Wow. Just wow. Review: I got this book on Tuesday afternoon and couldn't put it down. I read until around 3 a.m., when I fell asleep with it on my chest. The next morning I got up, made some coffee, and sat down and read until I finished it. I don't think I've ever been so captivated by a book. Alice Sebold is an astounding writer. I can't recommend The Lovely Bones highly enough.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: I started reading this book on a rainy Saturday and couldn't put it down. The characters were so real and at so many points I just wanted to step into the book and lend a shoulder for this family. Written from the murdered character's persective it truly is a riveting book.
Rating: Summary: One Word. Wow. Review: What a wonderful read. Took me 2 days. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: A good summer read Review: I was watching a Today show segment on new books being released when the reviewer commented, "If you only read one book this summer, this is the one." I don't know that I would go quite that far, but this is, nonetheless, a good time. If your tastes lean more toward literature than useless drible like Danielle Steele, and you are on the hunt for a good, quick read while on vacation, then this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: I hated to have it end! Review: It has been way too long since I've felt this way about a book. An amazing, gently uplifting story narrated by someone who could be any 14 year old we know. I'm so happy to have read it. Two weeks later, I am still thinking of Susie.
Rating: Summary: a triumph Review: This book is amazing: it confirms both our deepest fears and our greatest hopes about life and death, and in the end makes us deeply grateful for having read it.
Rating: Summary: Does life really end with death? Review: Not often do I pick up a book and say, "Wow, I've never read anything like this." Alice Seabold gives us a piece of literature that blossoms like a summer rose. It buds. The fragrance of her words permeate each page. As you move from chapter to chapter the story blooms. I'm reminded of Our Town and To Kill and Mockingbird. The Lovely Bones will become a classic.
Rating: Summary: An insightful look at life and death Review: Narrated by a very intelligent fourteen-year-old, Susie Salmon, this story opens with her violent death in a cornfield at the hands of a quietly deranged man, George Harvey. She narrates the story from heaven, a place that continually changes as she matures and watches her family's struggles and accomplishments on earth. Reeling from the grisly crime and not having closure to their daughter's death, Susie's parents have a difficult time coming to terms with this situation, and as a result, their marriage and relationships with their other two children suffer. This story is compassionately told, and the reader quickly feels close to Susie and her family. All of the characters in this small town are interesting and add their own flavor to this intriguing story. Although there's a sad undertone throughout, there are also hints of humor, hope, and love. At times, this was a difficult book to stomach, because of the gruesome nature of George Harvey's life. But overall, it was an excellent book with memorable characters and a masterful plot. It's a quick, mesmerizing read, that leaves you wanting to learn more about Susie's life in her heaven--a mysterious and very interesting place. I'd recommend this book for its unique perspective and its honest look at the effect death has on the people a deceased person leaves behind on earth.
