Summary: Original story - very well written
Review: I shall spare you a summary of the book, as that can be read in many of the other reviews and in the synopsis.

My reason for giving this book 5 stars : This is a very well written book, and the author is a great storyteller. The plot and the way the story evolves is original and unpredictable, and I was very moved by this book! The characters are wonderfully 3 dimensional, and it really gets under your skin - without being too sentimental or overly dramatic.
The description of how the girl and her family copes with what happens is deeply moving, the sinister bad guy gives you the creeps, and the pace of the story is just as it should be!

Summary: Great story idea that doen't quite deliver
Review: I too was very interested in reading this book. Both because I liked the story idea and because I had heard so much about it. As the book begins, we are told that 14-year old Susie Salmon has been murdered. We are told this by Susie herself who narrated the entire story from Heaven. In Heaven, Susie follows the lives of her grieving family, her friend on Earth, and the life of the man who killed her. We follow her as she sees her dad try and track down her killer. We see her younger sister, Lindsey, cope with her lose. And we see her Mother withdraw from life. All this is very "Lifetime" movie-ish and maybe if I was a woman I could connect with the story more. But to me, the story itself and its conclusion just didn't satisfy. I guess I was looking more for a mystery/thriller/revenge story that a mushy "made for TV movie" sort of story. Sebold is a great writer, so the book has that going for it, but I would have liked to see this story idea written by someone like Stephen King. I think he would have given this story some balls!!

Summary: Interestingly Bizarre
Review: A good read. It was written from an unusual perspective. Ever so slightly morbid, but still a good read.

Summary: * * * * 1/2 stars - truly a memorable book
Review: I was left speechless by this book. I am not giving it 5 stars, I rarely do, but this book brought to me that wonderful, gentle, loving sadness that would have made me cry, was I the crying type. Read it.

Summary: Good but a bit grisly for me...
Review: This book has a terrific plot. It is about young Susie Salmon dying and going to heaven. Unfortuantely, she dies on account she was raped and murdered. Aside from that grisly part in the beginning, this book is a good read. The way Sebold gives life to her charcters is great, though the mother seemed a bit unrealistic and too dramatic. If you can stand constant sex scenes and mention of rape, this is a good book to read.

Summary: ***A Gem Of A Book***
Review: I picked this up when it first came out, not having read reviews on it. It immediately sounded good from the dust jacket, so I soon began....
My, this is very touching. How often do you read a book where the main character is in Heaven, telling her version of the events that got her there?
This book engages you from the beginning & does not let go. You feel a variety of emotions throughout. The ending gives the book a nice finish as well.
I simply loved it.

Summary: Beautiful Creative take on Life and Death
Review: I just finished reading Lovely Bones and found myself moved to tears throughout. What a refreshing and original take on life and the grieving process from the deceased protagonist's perspective. I lost my brother nearly four years ago and found myself continually thinking about that loss, not only from my own individual perspective, but also from my parents and also more profoundly, from my brother's perspective. This book offers insight into the personal experience of death by each character. This book tells a truly beautiful story about the strength of life after death, for both the living and the dead.

Summary: A waste of time
Review: The book would have been perfect if it ended at the first chapter. The concept of the story is good but was poorly writen. The story went on and on and on... then ended.
A good idea gone bad.

Summary: i thought it was ok
Review: the book wasn't the greatest. it could have been better. it was kind of boring.

Summary: A new vantage point on grief and recovery...
Review: Although this book yanks on your heart strings, it honestly is a wonderful read. You truly feel the pain of the characters, as if you were one of them. It is by feeling this pain that you can also feel their small joys, and experience the grieving process. Be warned, the novel is as depressing as you would imagine (14-year old girl raped, butchered, etc)... but the events cause you to become emotionally invested in the book. A rare pleasure.

"Grief knits two hearts in closer bonds than happiness ever can; and common sufferings are far stronger links than common joys." -Alphonse de Lamartine.
