Summary: What's all the hype?
Review: I don't quite understand what the hype is about. The story moved too slowly for me. There was a lot of description and detail - a lot of which I felt unnecessary - that slowed the story down. This is a contemplative book, not a page-turner. More time is spent on long descriptions than on the events of the story. Also, there is no sense of justice for Susie's murder. Mr. Harvey's ultimate fate seems hallow and empty and the murder is never solved. The family never gets a real sense of closure, but just kind of falls to pieces ... Not a depressing book, but far from satisfying, either.

Summary: A beautiful, short life
Review: This is a most amazing book, for it manages to tell seamlessly tell the story of many disparate people who are all affected deeply by the murder of 14-year-old Susie Salmon. Salmon narrates from "her" heaven (which Sebold is careful to differentite from any else's idea of heaven). Because of this creative device, the author can see into any mind and any life. This omnisicent viewpoint--once popular, but now out of favor--truly makes the book vibrate with feeling.

The characters are beautifully drawn and their reactions believeable. The writing, especially the descriptions of Susie's heaven is so lush and sweet. Susie is never bitter, never vindictive, never judgmental, just an impartial observer on what was too short of a life.

Some people feel the description of Susie's death is too grisly, but I found it sensibly succinct, without any lingering on gore or depravity. In fact, I doubt I've ever seen this subject handled better.

Tiny gripes: the bad guy is dispatched too cleanly, the cops are way too bungling to be believed, and there are some editing glitches when seasons get mixed up. Certainly none of these are enough to ruin the reading experience.

This is a true treat for any reader.

Summary: Disgusting
Review: I admit that I have never read this book, but I read the excerpt and reviews etc. It is disgusting. No earthly human being has any right to write about Heaven, especially associated with what this book is associated with, having never been there. Also, especially because her description is twisted and untrue. Anybody that has ever been to sunday school or church, read the bible or believed in God knows that when you go to Heaven you will be happier than ever before, an that you won't long for earth, and that you will be sinless and pure. So if you're going to write a book about Heaven, which I think is just wrong, make sure your version isn't twisted and messed up. Nobody who writes a book will ever have a true interpretation of Heaven- it is one of those things that is wonderful and a true gift from God, but don't spoil it by rushing and using it, interpreting and writing books about it. That excerpt was upsetting. I suggest any knowledged or normal Christian look at this book with a disapproving eye. GOD BLESS YALL!

Summary: I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS......
Review: Why is it on the NYT bestsellers' list i have no idea, other than a interesting concept of posthumous narrative, there's nothing more to the novel than gratuitous emtional fluff. I can't believe i bought this book. If you are into that kinda stuff, and have nothing better to do, maybe u can consider buying if from me.

Summary: The Lovely Bones
Review: I truely enjoyed this book. Even after reading the other's reviews, I felt that this book was different. Which it was! In my humble opinion, hey, if you are reading fiction..expect it. It is a true work of fiction & really makes you think. You will only know that if you read the novel that is. We were talking @ my office about this book so i decided to buy it, WELL worth the price. And, I will share it w/the woman that told me about it, she will love it, as I did.

Summary: You either get it or you don't
Review: This is a beautiful piece of work. It addresses many horrific issues without brutalizing the sensibilities of the reader, but makes friends with the reader through familiarity and honesty and humor. Rather than describe the book, let me tell you that if you do begin it and you do not like it right from the beginning, stop reading it and go elsewhere. It is an original piece of art and originals, by definition, do not extend the comfort of the familiar. Judging from this list of reviews, many people were not comforted.
If you do join in the experience of the book, watch for Ruth. To me, she becomes a common day saint, perhaps the only such being of these times, because she acknowledges and honors the victims of the everyday wars against everyday women. She is my hero.

Summary: Great Book
Review: For a book with such a morbid begining, it was great. I couldn't stop reading. It makes you think about how heaven really is and what happens after you die. It was such an exciting book for being so short.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Heartbreaking and uplifting
Review: While I admit Sebold isn't going to win any awards for her technical writing skills, anything lacking fell aside when I was faced with the intense beauty (and sadness) of the story of Susie Salmon.

I started this book on a Sunday evening and finished it in the wee hours of Monday; I couldn't put it down! I found myself often laughing out loud or quietly sobbing to myself, sometimes in response to the same page of text.

I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages and genders. Sebold does a lovely job of creating a story with a personal message for each reader.
