Summary: Out of touch with today's youth.
Review: I read this book two years ago, at the ripe age of 17 for school. I was excited at first to finally read J.D. Salinger's "masterpiece" of teenage angst and disconnection. I myself, felt out of touch with the world. I didn't want to grow up, but stay a kid as long as I possibly could. At first, I was able to relate to young Holden and his lack of maturation. Then, after about fifty or so pages, I realized that Holden is too childish. Salinger does not succesfuly create a simpathetic character. In fact, Holden's repetitive ranting and raving over male-female sexual relations led me to lunacy. I was in tears, pulling out my hair. If I was reading this book for pleasure, and not for a class assignment, I would have thrown it out the window. I felt no connection with Holden, nor did any of my classmates the following day at school. Salinger's work may have been more powerful back in the fifties, but no longer holds up to today's standards. I only recommend this book to nostalgia buffs.

Summary: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!
Review: This book is one of that greatest literary works in America... but not only that.... it's HUMOROUS AND ENTERTAINING AS WELL AS ENLIGHTENING. The part with the child walking on the curb singing is... breathtaking...

Even if you tend to find classics boring, trust me, you will love this book!

Summary: This book caught me just as I was going over the edge.
Review: I read this book in one sitting when I was 15. I was hypnotised by the world of Holden Caulfield. To me he represents the dark side of the teen age mind. Many fail to see the real Holden, passing him off as just another teen-ager when he is in fact a very depressed and mentaly unstable person whose actions and feelings are those of a person suffering from a nevous breakdown. Anyone who has been through a period of mental instability can see the true meaning of the title. When I was 15 I went through a very severe battle with depresson after reading this book I saw the world from a compleatly diferent perspective. It gave me hope and understanding and as is implied in the title it caught me before I went over the edge. I think the reason that this book is so popular is because we are all crazy to some degree and those who criticise the book or dislike it are simply those who cannot accept that part of themselves. As long as there are humans on this earth this book will remain a classic

Summary: I'm sure it was great in 1951
Review: I was Caulfield's age when I read this (about a year and a half ago), and teachers and peers have classified me as a bitter, negative, cynical adolescent since the age of fourteen. For these reasons, I thought that a more recent perspective on this book might be worthwhile, that is, if anyone even notices this review amongst the eight hundred starry-eyed gushes that have already been posted on this page. I don't doubt for an instant that I would have been thrilled by this book in 1951, but in more modern times, I feel that the non-conformity issues are too simple for anyone who has done any more than dabbling in independent thinking. My intense negative reaction to the Catcher in the Rye was formed more by my observation of the degree to which the book is worshipped and revered, rather than the unremarkable content of the book itself. People who wish to be classified as "free thinkers" for the sake of social status swoon over this book in an embarrassing, lemming-like manner. The main character, Holden Caulfield, is intensely irritating, and his constant use of stupid phrases and interjections made me want to crack his head open like a ripe melon. Since the book is written from his perspective, all hopes for a satisfying narrative are in vain. On the positive side, this book is very simple and short, and one can get through it quickly and painlessly in a few hours. The same cannot be said for much of the insufferable trash which oozes its way onto the required reading lists of high schools across the nation. My condolences to those of you who consider this book your life's inspiration.

Summary: One of the best books I've ever read
Review: I read this book on reccomendation from my English teacher uncle. I'd heard a lot about it and I said "ah, why not?" I couldn't put it down. When describing the book, I could hear how, to someone who hasn't read it, Holden Caulfield sounds like a slacker who cannot even think straight, has no morals and no self-dicipline. But when you read it, you see that while he's low on common sense, he's got a lot of really "deep" thoughts. He sheds a new light on various things, such as where do ducks go in the winter, phonies @ expensive schools and "flits." He's extremely opiniated and sometimes you find yourself swinging to his way of thinking. I reccomend this to everyone who could read it.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Stunning and surprising
Review: This book is good in many ways: the characters, the story and the way the author guides you through the story itself. I enjoyed it very much, I only disagree on the fact Holden is a typical teenager. I wasn't like that in many aspects. Still probably he is NOT the typical teenager and that's why the story works!
