Rating: Summary: Ugh Review: Maybe I'm in the minority, but I really didn't care for this book. It's very depressing all around and I left me with no closure. What's more, I hated Holden; how much do you really want to read about a character you hate?
Rating: Summary: Too much whining Review: Maybe I am a bit more optimistic about life than the average reader who loves this book. I was about 1/3 into the book and can't figure out where this is going except that it's making me depressed but I figure I'd give it a shot since it's a "classic." This book is about disillusionment and distrust with the world, if you evaluate it only based on this the book does a fine job of painting the picture. Nonetheless I don't find it enjoyable or entertaining.. it's not that kind of book.
Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Rye Review Review: From the very first page this book was easy to get into. It's told from a sixteen year old boys point of view, over a course of about 4 days. The boy, Holden, learns he is flunking out of his private school, Pencey Prep. He decides to run away. During the four days he is gone, he encounters several unusual experiences. I did like this book, a lot actually, but certain times during the book it got confusing and sometimes a little annoying because some of the things Holden did, specifically the way he was judgmental of a lot of people before he even knew them. Throughout the book I appreciated the way he was against 'phoney' people. He wanted people to be real with him, but it seemed like whenever someone was being real with him, he was always thinking to himself about how that person was a phoney. I was left wondering what "being real" was with Holden, and it was hard to define because the only person he really didn't call a phoney was Phoebe. I didn't really like the ending, either. It was odd because he was kind of building up to the end of the book, and then he just said, "I don't feel like telling you what happened next." It was weird, but at the same time I expected that from Holden. Even though Holden sometimes was arrogant and unpleasant, I believe that is the way the book is supposed to be. It was overall a good book and I did like it very much. I do recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Could you whine just a little more? Review: Let me set it straight, if anyone comes to a problem in life, SOLVE IT, DONT B*TCH ABOUT IT. If you can understand that much, and can agree, this book is NOT for you.
Rating: Summary: This is Life Review: Holden is one of the most realist characters, i feel, in american literature. Anyone who has ever found themselves on the outside of society, should read this book and live by it. The only reason this book should have been banned by American views is because its the truth, but as the the poet and my english teacher, John Stanizzi, always quotes; "tell the children the truth". This book is a work of art, Salinger has outdone himself an has set the standard for an aspiring writer. Narration through the most truthful and realistic manner, is through Holden's voice. Greatest book, in probably the 20th century
Rating: Summary: I liked Holden, a teenager from anywhere, anytime! Review: Great book, no dark messages, just a kid unable to get over the grief of losing his brother (after all they were close in age and also it was a recent loss). The whole family were still coming to terms with this as his mother "hadn't been the same since" his father was emotionally distant, brother geographically the same. His heart was in the right place, e.g. questioning middle-class snobbery and politely deciding whether to rebel or not! I loved him but nothing sinister....... not a bit! :o) x
Rating: Summary: My Review Review: I read this book in a couple of days last summer. I'm going to have to read it again for school this year. I really like the first sentence. I like the beginning, and I like the way the book is written, but I wouldn't say I like this book. I guess I don't see what sets it apart. Holden, the main character, who is sixteen, wasn't as cynical as I thought it would be. I mean, I'm probably more cynical than him. I like the way Salinger didn't find it necessary to use correct grammar or anything and that he wasn't afraid to swear and stuff. I'm not sorry I read it or anything. I thought the characterization was good. One thing I didn't get was why Holden was so concerned with little kids not finding out about stuff, like the way he didn't want them to see the swearwords carved into things. I don't get why everybody always hides stuff from little kids.
Rating: Summary: It's Ok. Review: I think that the book "catcher in the rye" was a good book but not a great one. It's basicly about a boy, Holden Caulfeild, that gets kicked out of a prep school because he is failing every class. His parents don't expect him home for a few weeks, so he wanders around New York city. Throughout the book he calls up people he knows from the past just to talk. I also wasn't to fond of the author's writing style. He always goes into so much detail about stuff that isn't relevent to the story. Besides that, I thought the story was funny, although they probobly weren't supposed to be. I also thought the story itself was pretty good, as I'm sure anybody can relate to Holden in someway or another.
Rating: Summary: Ryan's Review Review: I thought that this book was a very good read. I mostly liked it because it was a teenager that the book was about. I could relate to it. I also liked how Holden told the story. In the story Holden went through a lot of problems that kids go through now. Some are different but you could definitly relate to them. It talks about how when you were a child that you really couldn't see over the rye field and how his name resembled that. Also how if you were an adult you were able to see the edge of the cliff. You can also relate to that because there are some things your parents just don't tell you, but you want to know but you just can't. That is how i kinda of interpreted it. I loved the detail in this story. I really liked how the author described exactly how Holden was feeling about what was going on in the story. I thought the whole part about Allie and her death was really good and how he explained how Holden felt about it. Also how he kinda of held back about a lot of things, but when he would go and visit Phoebe he would act a lot different. How he would open up about a lot of things around Phoebe. Well, overall I really liked this story a lot, mostly because I could relate to some of the situations. I really liked how the author wrote the story I just thought that it was really great. I definitly suggest that you read it.
Rating: Summary: Good Book !!! Review: I find this book to be a good read beacuse it gives an insight in the mind of a teenager who is confused about what he wants to do in life. He is not motivated and has a very restless mind. While reading the book you will feel as if you know the character(Holden) very well as during his conversations he also tells us what is going in his mind. The story is basically his thoughts and people he meets in a four day period after he gets kicked out fom his High School and wanders in New York.I say read it for pleasure or to find out how does someone confused and less motivated see and perceive things in life. I found it very interesting as how his mind wandered from thought to thought without making any decisions. It will help you understand the confused and disoriented crowd to some extent.
