Rating: Summary: ??? Review: This book was probably the most interesring book I have ever read in my 17 years of being on the planet. It was tear jerking, discusting, and best of all- Hilarious. But after I had finished the book, somebody asked me what it was about. I found mysely struggling to answer them and I finally said, I'm not sure. So I give Mr. Sallinger 3 Big stars for a great book. But please-- what is the point??
Rating: Summary: A story of a young man coping with life Review: This is a well written book with an interesting plot. Holden Caulfield is very cynical of the world around him, and perhaps especially of himself, and he becomes what I would call depressed. Holden becomes angry and bitter, and all this is displayed quite realistically. For another book in this genre (a better one in my opinion), check out "Lost in Place," the story of a boy/man growing up in suburbia. Like "The Catcher in the Rye," "Lost in Place" deals with life and the protagonist's outlook on it.
Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Rye lost my attention Review: I have no i dea why this work is so popular; it is equivolent to a PG-13 movie about a teenager that lacks a plot.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books ever! Review: I was just given this book to read for grade twelve english and I couldn't put it down. I absolutely fell in love with this story, with Holden. I mean the guy just killed me. This was a truly great book (and this is coming from a teenager so if I kept reading instead of watching MTV you know it's good)! Read it, read it now!
Rating: Summary: This is one grand read! Review: When I just opened to the first page of this modern classic, I knew this was my type of read. It stirred me from the start! I mean, think about this kid who talks so informally to you and tells you of all this "David Copperfield crap" and how much you know about him from the first few lines. Another highlight of the book is when Holden tells us he gets expelled from what is his fourth school and throughout the passage of time, has no one to turn to and is a child in a world alone. He runs away from his Pencey School and spends three days in New York. Holden just wants to find his place under the sun and escape all the "phonies" and "crap" of his environment. The boy runs away from Robert Ackley, a classmate of his at Pencey, and his annoying roommate named Stradlater, who asks him to write a composition for his English class on anything specific. Holden chooses to write about his younger brother Allie's baseball mitt; he died on July 18, 1946. This glove was filled with poems on it and it stood out. This was lying in Holden's suitcase where he lived (An important highlight of the tale that CANNOT afford to be missed). Stradlater goes on a date that night with Jane Gallagher, who turns out to be Holden's longtime girlfriend whom he hadn't seen for five years. For further information on this gem of a novel, get your copy of "The Catcher in the Rye" ASAP. Hopefully, you'll get the same interest out of reading it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: Relevant as ever!!! Review: This is my first review for Amazon, so i figure why not review one of my favorites of all time.Hard to believe I actually never had to read this book for a class, I read it out of curiosity, and I'm thankful that I did. Thsi book should be a must for all english courses as well as sociology and even psychology, everyone who sees the "phony" nature of society, should love this book.
Rating: Summary: This book put my view of life in a new perspective... Review: Holden Caulfield's view of the world really changed my view. Though I may not have understood it, I sort of understood the main points. I may not be as well-read or observant as the other critics. I was just a sophomore when I read it, and when I went back to school, I started to see all the "phonies" in my life. I would highly recommend this book if you like reading about alienist loners.
Rating: Summary: It was one of the best books I ever read Review: I had bought this book to read on my trip to Costa Rica. The entire time I was there I found my nose in this book. I feel it was well written and think that everyone should read it. I personally could relate to it and think maybe it will help people look at the world a little differently. It truely was one of the best books I have ever read. After completing it I just wanted to keep on reading. I wantd more to happen I liked it so much. Being 15 at the time I recomend this to both adults and teens.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK SAVED MY SANITY...... Review: I first read this book as a junior in High School; now a year later I've read it 11+ times! I too was struggling with life, and trying to transcend society and its hollow materialistic values. After I read this book, and others by the author, I decided to leave Lutheranism, for Buddhism. It has helped me greatly. At the time I first read the book thte weight of the hypocracy I saw around me was staggering, and I was struggling to fight off an impending nervous breakdown. Im a saved person because of this book. Thank you JD Salinger, wherever you are....
Rating: Summary: I'm ruining the average Review: By giving 'Catcher" one star I realize that I am ruining its high average, but I also figure that if you're really interested in buying it, you'll read the bad stuff before ALL the reams of good stuff otherwise availiable. So I tricked you. One star for one terrific book. I assure you, Holden offers more insight to the average teenage lost soul than most anything out there. Granted it doesn't speak to everyone in the same way, but I assure you if you found 1 minute of your teenage years awkward, Catcher will strike a chord with you. So read it, it won't take long, as it is hard to put down. Ciao.
