Rating: Summary: That book was one stinger! Totally amazing stuff. Review: Not much of a review. I am 17 and reading a story about another 17 year old, behaving rather differently from you really makes you think. I am not inspired. I am just plain amazed and awed by his personality. Realism, forthrightness, hit-you-in-the-face.....
Rating: Summary: Must be read more than once to understand its meaning Review: I'm disappointed in those 17 year old kids who think they are smart enough and experienced enough to negatively judge this amazing book with just one reading. Holden does not represent all teenagers. He is sick and needs help. This book gives us the opportunity to try and understand what some kids experience. Don't try to be like Holden, try to help him.
Rating: Summary: Best book you've ever read? Read some more... Review: I think it's really funny that most of this book is devoted to examining "phonies". Holden is a "phony". This is quite useful information if you prefer to search for meaning in the book; it allows Salinger to say two things at once: e.g.-he points out the phoniness around us, while at the same time decrying the hypocracy of American culture (pointing out phoniness when we ourselves are phony). Pretty interesting, but it doesn't stack up against the more interesting, meaningful, and longer studies of culture that followed, i.e. Catch-22, The Recognitions, Gravity's Rainbow, and Infinite Jest.
Rating: Summary: What can I say? Review: Pretty good. Interesting idea of writing a whole book based on a few days. Holden's character is quite interesting. He seems like a pretty lonely guy. It seems a bit contradictory for him to call everyone a phoney when he lies all the time. He is also quite judgemental. But he percieves the world quite interestingly. I can really relate to him. The things he talks about i can instantly understand (except for the bit about him practising on a hooker).
Rating: Summary: This is a marvelous book Review: I really liked this book. I can't count how many times I've read it. I'm 15,and I'm a girl. Alot of the reviews on here keep talking about how this is a great book for guys and how every guy should read it. I guess I'd just like to add that girls should read it too. It's very intresting, and really funny too. It's the kind of book that you can read over and over and never get sick of. All you people who come on here and complain about how bad this book is are really bugging me. One person said that Holden was the biggest whinner they had ever heard of. Geez, listen to yourself.
Rating: Summary: It is a wonderful book. Review: It is a wonderful book. It shows us that part of us, that is not allowed to see the light. J.D. Salinger has written a book that does not allow you to hide those feelings and emotions.
Rating: Summary: Can they print enough copies? Review: I came to this site after reading the reviews of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. Out of pure curiosity i have been reading reviews of all my favourite books, next I shall go to Catch 22. I just HAD to write something here to contribute to this communal worship. . . I have read this book maybe 15 times over the years and its not because i am looking for hidden depths, etc. It is because Catcher In The Rye is so IMMENSELY READABLE. The prose is addictive. I pick the book up every now and again, usually when the impression has faded or whatever, and one paragraph is all it takes, I end up reading the whole thing again. This is one of those books you wished carried on and on. DO NOT LEND IT TO ANYONE!!! YOU MAY NOT GET IT BACK!!!!
Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Rye Review: I am 15 yrs old, I read this book and found it very interesting. Holden is abnormal, but that is what makes it interesting, It is a great criticism of society. For all those people who don't like how things go for the upper class. GREAT BOOK.
Rating: Summary: The kind of book that changes lives. Review: How is it that some people can dismiss The Catcher in the Rye with the simple phrase "I didn't get it"., or "there's no plot."? Those that love this book, and we all know exactly why, feel for these poor people. This is a truly timeless book and reading it is not a spectator experience. The reader must, and I say that emphatically, read between the lines with this one. How can someone read this book and forget it? Does any one not know what it's like to be Holden? But that, in itself isn't even the point. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, I can't even begin to explain it to you. But for those of you that do know, you understand what it is about this truly amazing, profound and real masterpiece that has the potential to change a person's view of the world.
Rating: Summary: very interesting-great book Review: The book The Catcher in the Rye was one of the best books I have ever read, and also my favorite. As a fifteen year old myself I understood much of what Holden was going through. I got the book and didn't stop reading it untill I finished it the next night. I loved the style of writing and it kept me interested untill the very last word.
