Summary: Captures a youth's mind
Review: Just like everyone else, I read this book in high school and then again several years later (when I was 22). I didn't have much interest in reviewing this book until I read some of the other comments. While reading Catcher, the book never came across as controversial or "vulgar" to me, and I am shocked that anyone would interpret it as such. Such opinions (granted, they were few) are more of a comment on the antiquated opinions and values of their authors, rather than the content of this classic novel. One need only look at how many young kids (anywhere from 12-18) have fallen in love with the book; whose passion for reading, and thus learning and expanding their young minds, has been triggered by Salinger. What a gift to give a child. Maybe it was because I thought I was "too cool" to enjoy a school assignment, or maybe I was just a dumb acne-faced kid, but I never embraced any book in such a way. But I feel as though I missed out on an intimate experience with literature that took some 5 years later to achieve. The point is, in an age where your kids learn more from MTV than from you, consider yourself lucky that Catcher in the Rye finds its way into their minds.

Summary: Im not the type to read for pleasure
Review: I bought the book just for something to do after my car accident. Me being 16 and all I didnt have much life after I lost the car. I love the way I could fly though it. All the "old slang" I understood pretty well without grabbing for Mr. Dictionary. . Holden was in a situation that I know I could relate to. (Well not the prostitute part but..same feeling running through my blood though.) I agree that the world is full of phonies and it just surprized me that J.D. wasnt trying to shove some typical hog slog story down my neck. (Like all the other "Great Writers") Just read the book. If you want to know what kids have to put up with (from parents, society, school cheeses, and the pain of loosing someone that just made your day when you'd do nothing but childish things) then read the book.

Summary: A magnificent book with a great theme & plenty of potential
Review: Holden is a young boy not quite sure what life in general is about. He takes the reader on a journey through his mind, where he tells us how he feels about things, sharing many ideas that many of us agree with but are to afraid to say. We see that Holden doesn't have all the answers, in fact that may be what makes this book so appealing. Altough the reader may at times be appalled by Holden's attitude, judgement, and fierce language, we also find him to be irresistable. When Holden realizes he is about to be kicked out of his prep school, he decides to leave early and not face his family quite yet. Instead he decides to take control of his own life. Alone in the city, Holden tries to discover just what he has to offer. There is really nothing special about Holden except for the fact that he is like so many of us, just struggling to survive.

Summary: THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME!!
Review: The Catcher in the Rye ie the best book I have read in a long time. Holden Caufield is just how he wants to be and that is what makes this book so wonderful. He knows what he likes and dislikes. I have recommended it to everyone I know!!

Summary: Showing that its a great book i would like to say.......
Review: This is the best, most influential book i have ever read. This is the book that got me interested in reading (in general). Now the only Salanger book i have yet to read is (Seymore : Raise High the roof Beam, an introduction.) I recomend people buy all his books. They just keep getting better as you read them.

Summary: everyone is a little crazy, but methinks that is kinda nice
Review: Catcher is the perfect book to read when you are in your angsty teen years. Not only did this book inspire me to purchase a hunting hat, i also intend to name a child, or perhaps a dog, after our disaffected antihero Holden Caulfield. the boy every high school student should feel at least some empathy toward. Holden Caulfield let us know that sometimes it's fine to be a little offbeat. touching, funny and just a little whimsical, my life would be all the poorer without knowing that the world is full of Holden Caulfields. A masterwork of touching human understatement.

Summary: Universal Human Values
Review: I read the "Catcher in the Rye" a number of times while I was living in Romania: first an excellent translation, later the original.
It is less important to me that the book is perfect: absolutely every sentence is perfectly balanced independently and with the rest of the book.
What's amazing is that it seems to bring up some universal human values that were there in post-war US in the 50s, in communist Romania in the 80s, in information age Canada in the 90s, and probably a lot of other times and places.

Summary: This book is most certainly a must-read
Review: I'm a teenager, and I was going on a long car ride with my family, so I thought that I would bring a book to help ease the boredom. I chose Catcher in the Rye. This book is the best I have ever read. I don't think that there is a better book to describe a teen than this book. His experiences are some of the same I have gone through (some, not all). Someone said that this book had no physical plot. Well, I think that is what makes it so good. A book this well-written doesn't really need a plot. It's about life, and life doesn't always follow a physical plot. This book is excellent and well written. A deftinate must read.
