Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: This was a great book. I am very glad I read it. At first I thought it sounded pretty stupid becuase I thought it was going to be about a bread factory of something like that. But it turned out to be a great book about a kid growing up.
Rating: Summary: like it or not, it gets a reaction Review: after reading all these reviews, i couldn't help but notice how VEHEMENTLY people reacted to Catcher. whether the book is good or not remains a matter of opinion, but if the test of a good book is to get a strong reaction from its readers, then i'd say this book has passed the test. what do YOU think?
Rating: Summary: By far the best book I've ever read. Review: Holden is a character many people can relate to. I've read this book dozens of times and every time I laugh and inevitably find myself enjoying it more than the last time I read it. This is my all-time favorite book next to J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories. The man is a genius.
Rating: Summary: It would be impossible to sum up this book in one line. Review: To be brief...this book was excellent, magical, and very moving. Although I grew up in a different country, it was easy for me to relate with Holden Caulfield because I used to live in NY and I think any 18-year-old teenager could easily relate to his character. When I first started reading this book, I was amused by the main character. As I continued to read, I began to despise Holden because it seemed that he would never be satisfied with anything. By the end of the book, I could understand why he refused to compromise. He WAS phony like the rest of them, which was why he couldn't even stand himself much less the rest of the world. Allie and Pheobe were the only two people he found honesty and purity in. He felt lost and desperate to escape the phoniness of the world, yet he couldn't escape because there was no place to go...and i don't think he really wanted to go...he wanted to be free...but what did that mean? Anyhow, this book was not a melodramatic, teary, overdone book. This story was very realistic although the use of slang seemed a bit redundant. The reason why this book has offended so many people and has caused so much controversy, is because it is a great book that can not be interpreted so simply. A book that causes debate must be a great.
Rating: Summary: An All Time Classic! Review: " The Catcher in the Rye' wasn't a book that I had the chance to read in high school. Recently, my wife recommened the book to me. She said it would be something I would really enjoy. She was right. I couldn't put the book down. It is one of the best novels I've read in a long time. Salinger's masterpiece follows the misadventures of 16 year old Holden Caulfield. The book follows Holden on a three day journey through New York. He shares his cynical and often negitive views on life, family and "so-called" friends. He finds faults in almost everyone he talks about. If they aren't Phony they are boring. At one point, you realize that he's just as phony as everyone else. There are points where you feel for Holden and other times you hate him. The brilliance of the book is not the plot. obviously there hardly is one. But it doesn't matter. What makes this book work is it's study of the human condition. Salinger has really hit the nail on the head with this timeless classic.
Rating: Summary: If you haven't read this book you will never understand life Review: I really, really love this book. I'd say it's one of the best books I've ever read, actually, and having read at least three books a week since I learned to read at the age of six, that tells me a lot. Your mileage may vary. Holden is cynical, yet rather optimistic in a way. Depressing, maybe, but I think the reason people think it's depressing is because you recognize a lot of your own feelings and thoughts - most of them feelings and thoughts you don't really want to recognize. The language in the book might be offensive to some people, personally I've never cared much about cuss words, etc - they're just a part of the general "shape" or style of the book, and as long as they don't interfere with the rest of the book, I don't mind. Anyway, I'm ranting and I'm not supposed to. What I meant to say was: If you haven't read this book, go read it. If you don't own it, borrow, or better, buy it (you're going to want to read it a couple of more times, and people tend to want the things you borrowed from them back). You will regret it if you don't.
Rating: Summary: One of the most honest and important works ever. Review: "The Catcher In The Rye" is my all-time favorite book. It drew me in immediately, and before long, I fell for Holden Caulfield's cynicism and angst, as well as his vulnerability and hidden tenderness. Salinger perfectly developed the character, exposing and displaying Holden to make the reader feel as though they are snooping on someone's innermost private thoughts. I felt like I could get inside this character- like he reached out to me. I suppose it seems silly to get so involved with a book, but this book is so gutsy, so full of life, that I couldn't help but get involved. Read it and see for yourself.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT READ Review: I read this book for English class but at first I didn't want to read it. As a teenager, I was really able to relate to Holden. At first I didn't like the book much, because Holden seemed too judgemental, but I discovered why he was like that. And his reasons seemed justified, and he was just reacting to the ugliness of the world. I feel the author did a great job with character development. And wrote from the perspective of a teenager, which Holden was. The only improvement I felt was needed was a new cover. I highly recommend this book for all age groups, especially for teenagers.
Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended!! Review: This book is one of the best I've read and most inspiring. It was some what depressing but reminded me that every day and everyone has challenge but no matter what; fate steps in and makes everything right again. READ IT!! =)
Rating: Summary: The Graduate of the literary world Review: I'm damned glad Salinger will never allow this to be filmed. Picture it. Ethan Hawke whining and saying "really" a lot. Ugh!! I will read this book every two years until I'm too old to remember how it feels to be Holden Caufield. BECAUSE I read it every two years, I hope I'll never forget. If you're a 7th-grader reading it because it has curse words in it, read Judy Blume's Wifey or something, cuz you're missing the point People who assail this book for its lack of plot might just as well try to learn botany from Monet's Waterlilies. No other novel of the last 50 years even comes close.
