Summary: The Man in the Mirror
Review: Believe me that's what I felt after finishing 'Catcher..' I mean this was really amazing how the human nature, wherever you go, remains the same.
Though I hardly share any of the cultural similirities with Holden, as I'm from the eastern philosophy, and much stronger are its roots inside me.
I come from a state having quite a strong literature and philosophical background in India, Many of the modern authors of our language shared the same kind of feelings and we'd identified our egos with those.
But even though the expereience given by Holden is all that closer to me. The lonliness and intense fear of losing the innocence is not only restricted to his age but can be experienced at any stage of life.
In Holden I've found my own anguish about my family and it's ties. The beloved ones and my friends. The strong inhibitions against all those 'phonies' around me, all those so called 'well-wishers' clobbering over me from anywhere.

Over and above that the language which makes it so intense and one from the bottom of the heart, that even though you may not really agree with what he says, (actually there's nothing concrete or 'enlighting' which he says, the better expression would be you may not feel the same way he's feeling)
it's a great literarry experience even for a stranger to English language like me. For me English was very unfamiliar and very distant language, not definitely after I've read 'Catcher..' Thanx Mr. Salinger thank you very much.

Summary: A PUERILE ATTEMPT AT EXPLAINING ADOLESCENTS
Review: This must be one of the worst books I have read since Nancy Drew mysteries. The book is meandering and meaningless. The reader has no sympathy for a spoilt, arrogant little twerp. Holden spends his high scool years being thrown out of every institution he enters. He hates everybody from teachers to his parents, schoolfriends and girls. He is capable of erratic behaviour, drinking binges and spends money as if it was water. He comes from a wealthy privileged background but hates that fact. He is at war with a world which he thinks has betrayed him - everybody is a "phony" (a word which the author uses so often that it loses its meaning). Holden is absorbed in self-pity. The reader is compelled to take an unsympathetic stance to the whining main character (also the narrator). Net result-a big "thumbs down" for this one!

Summary: A great book! (For those who see the big picture)
Review: I am currently in 9th grade, and I was required to read "Catcher in the Rye" for my English class. At first, the book didn't strike me as a classic the way the reviews suggested, but to prepare for an in-class discussion, I went back and plowed through it again, this time finding my alterego in Holden.

"Catcher in the Rye" presents a realistic view of our world, plain and simple. It speaks the mind of someone who can think and do for himself rather than simply conforming to the senseless do's and don'ts of society. Holden may appear as a spoiled brat, but that is the art of Salinger's writing. He puts bigger issues into the content of everyday situations, and in order to appreciate it, one has to approach this with an open mind and the ability to look beyond details for the bigger picture.

There are some people who think that the language is too vulgar, and that this book should be banned from children's bookshelves. All I have to say is, Holden's language is all sugar compared to what kids learn from watching MTV, and if you can't handle a few "goddamn"s then don't read it.

Summary: To all the critics:
Review: For those people who think Holden is shallow and believe this book is worthless: it is the exact opposite because Holden is so lovable for his genuine characteristics. He hates "phonies" because he simply wants to be true to himself. Personally, I can't stand it when people are so fake and superficial. Someone who believes that Holden is a jerk obviously has not tried to look at life on a deeper level--beyond the flaky surface of people...how people THINK they should act when what they are doing is much worse than communicating how you really feel. This book just hits the spot when expressing the frustrations of life during adolescence.

Summary: AN INSPIRATION TO ALL INDIVIDUALISTS
Review: Holden is the character in literature who helps others understand the process of bidungsroman. Some may argue that Holden is infantile and even vulgar, however I argue that he matured into a young man who wanted to protect children and preserve innocence. His constant scratching off obscenties is evident of this. I am in college now and majoring to be a secondary English educator, I indeed plan on teaching "Catcher". It is a must read about the adversaries we all face in growing up_alienation, conformity, struggle for individualism, and adaptation of change.

Summary: HOLDEN IS A SPOILED BRAT
Review: Who cares what a rich spoiled brat thinks of the world? Holden should stop whining for a second and wake up to realize the world doesn't revolve around him. If you want real literature, read Steinbeck and Dickens.

Summary: A wonderful book for young adolescent readers!
Review: Every teenager should read this book. The change of adolescence into adulthood can be difficult to handle. Teenagers can relate very well to this book. Teenagers have challenges in school just as Holden Caulfield had. Everyone goes through changes in life, but eventually everyone finds their right place in life!

Summary: One of my favorite books of all time!!
Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is only banned because of the uttter truth it tells of the life of an adolescant. It carries you through love and laughter with Holden as well as all of his sadness, and the problems he must face. It makes one look at the world in a completly different way, as well as the people in the world. I LOVED it.

Summary: A Truthful Account of Adolesence
Review: I loved reading "The Catcher in The Rye". This held my attention from start to finish. You learn to love Holden, and identify with him. I'm a teenager and I can relate to his feelings, because most teenagers feel the same way. The thing that really perplexes me, is the people who have no use for this book, and want to ban it. WHY? You don't ban the truth! I would love to know of any books that are similar to this. So far I haven't found any. For anyone who likes family values, look at Holden and his sister. This is one kind book.
