Rating: Summary: The Catcher in the Rye Review: I was required to read The Catcher in the Rye for school and I must say that it was my favorite book that we read all year. Holden, the main character, is a cynical teenager and the book is about his "adventures" after getting kicked out of school. I really liked the way the book was written. It uses slang and cuss words just how it would be like if Holden was actually telling you his story. The plot is very exciting and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens. It is a fabulous book that I would recommend to any teenager or adult.
Rating: Summary: Salinger's a literary genius Review: Without a doubt, The Catcher in the Rye is one of the best books I've ever read. Many people observe that this book is about someone who is clinically insane, but I read something completely different in Salinger's work. I view Holden, the main character, as a typical teenage boy with a bit more insight than the average person. I see him as someone who looks at the negativity in the world and has a yearning to grasp even one small piece of innocence within it, but is blinded by the depravity that he sees everyday. I think that the book is about Holden trying to preserve innocence before realizing finally that it is impossible, and therefore he needs to find happiness in places where he normally wouldn't look to find it in order to prevent impending insanity. There are many different interpretations of this piece, and all of the interpretations hold weight, regardless of the fact that the various viewpoints are very much in dissent with one another. This is a piece that can be appreciated and understood by anyone, and I would recommend that everyone get their hands on a copy of this book.
Rating: Summary: Worth reading again and again Review: This is truely a great book. The book tells the story of a teenager named Holden. Holden is struggling with life and is having a hard time figuring out what he wants to do and on top of that he is still very sad about the death of his younger brother Allie. In the beggining Holden gets kicked out of his school. He then goes into New York City and thats where a lot of crazy things start to happen. Holden is a great character and I highly recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: One of the most memorable books in my life Review: This is an all-time must-read. An American classic. 'Nuf said.
Rating: Summary: Overrated Piece Of American Lit. Review: Catcher in the Rye was an enjoyable and worthwhile read, but everyone's enormous praise for this book made it a huge letdown. It's very preachy and the points it makes are misplaced.
Holden, the main character, is extremely cynical, sometimes understandable, sometimes not, and is yellow.
With all of the people who have fallen in love with this book over the years, it makes me wonder if there is something wrong with them, or something wrong with me.
Rating: Summary: Catch it while you can Review: So many coming-of-age novels owe a great debt to CATCHER. Certainly there were books before this one that had the COA theme-HUCK FINN comes to mind. But it seems that an avalanche followed after this one. Jackson McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD certainly owes a debt, as does the novel, SHE'S COME UNDONE. But Salinger's book is a classic, now read widely in just about every language. J.D. Salingers' CATCHER IN THE RYE is the most outstanding and best written novel out there. At first hard to understand but once you go in depth you find out the true meaning of the story. Holden's not being able to come to grips with the adult world and seeing everyone as a 'phoney' doesnt want to turn out this way. Holden's narotic deteration starts with his brothers death and you read how Holden becomes more suicidal as the story progresses. Only in the end to find hope in his little sister and realizes that he can and will do things on his own terms and become a Catcher in the Rye. The meaning is that as a child steps off the cliff into adult hood he will be there to catch them. This book is extremely good and I recommend to anyone and everyone. Would also recommend THE CHILDREN'S CORNER by the author Jackson Tippett McCrae.
Rating: Summary: Teenage Confidential Review: There's a charm to this story that apparantly outlasts the generation it was written for(those people are now in their 60's?) Amazing, because when I picked up this book recently--after years of reading it some 15 years ago--it sounds just as fresh as if it were written today--the VOICE-- that is.
Holden totaly engages us and pulls us into his world, reminding us that a sign of enduring literature is when a story manages to be just as lively years and years into the future as this book will certainly become. What inspired me to re-read this classic, though, is another gem, a more contemporary tale dealing with the late adolescent today-- the wry & hilarious SIMON LAZARUS. One significant difference, though, its its depth and compelling story. I so totally recommend along with Salinger's here. Worthy of careful comparision. It's that good.
Rating: Summary: Like Everyday Life... Review: I WOULD suggest this book to anyone who insn't interested in books with tons of action. In my opinion, this book reads extremely fast because of the casual tone. It's much like every day life which, naturally, we're all accustomed to. However, there isn't much action. It's insightful and entertaining which adds something to your own everyday life. Read it; it's great!
Rating: Summary: One of a Kind! Review:
The storyline is remarkably intriguing and is exceptionally simple. The reason for this book's success, in my opinion, is the way the story is told. Since the story happens to be so common (adolescent escapades) Salinger had to make the book standout in his own way. His formula for success in this case was speaking in a truly original dialect. The slang that Holden speaks, is still edgy to this very day. Salinger is a master of dialect, and it really shines in The Catcher in the Rye.
Salinger's characters are also among the main ingredients in his recipe for success. Each character with it's own trademark. He really captures the different personalities in the world. The characters are written about in such a way that keeps you entertained, and interested. The emotions portrayed by the characters make such a strong impact. When someone is annoyed you can empathize, when someone is angry, you feel bad for them.
I really can't emphasize enough, the talent that Salinger has. He is so fresh, so unique, so smart. The conflicts he comes up with really make you think. The whole story makes you think, and it doesn't stop at the last word. The Catcher in the Rye will leave you in puzzlement for many days. There are so many questionable actions, and so many questionable reactions.
If you like an intelligent and clever entertaining novel, check out The Catcher in the Rye. If you've read some of Salinger's work, and you liked it, you have to read The Catcher in the Rye, it's by far his best work. I really can't stress enough how important this piece of literature is in the fabric of today's books.
Quite frankly, this book was breathtaking. I was truly astonished by the fact that something written in 1951 was this fascinating. Who would have thought that a book about a cynical adolescent would become one of the greatest bestsellers of all time? If you're in the mood to learn a lot of lessons from an entertaining perspective, you should read The Catcher in the Rye. Another, more recent book I enjoyed is The Losers Club by Richard Perez -- which reminded me of The Catcher in the Rye.
Rating: Summary: Adults, Please Leave This Book Alone! Review: If you are a teenager, read it. I mean it. Read "The Catcher in The Rye" now before you are too old to "read" it.
As a high school student, not only did I enjoy reading this book, but I literally found my identical twin in this book; Holden Caulfield. Every single words he spitted hit my hearts as I was experiencing deja vu.
I have long had so many questions that can not be, do not deserved to be, answered. Yet I do not like that answer, neither did Holden. Where do I go from here?
Holden's short 3-day adventure partially pointed me out a way out and perhaps did throw out more questions on my face.
This book is much more than Peter Pan Syndrome, antisocial behavior, and a "cynical adolescent".
And Life is much more than schools, adults, and a sex.
In a sea of neon, clocks are racing toward the mid-night, when will our souls be solaced?
