Summary: Everyone can relate
Review: Holden Caulfield, the main character in this book, is a teenage boy who is trying to figure himself out. He starts out in a boarding school, yet leaves without permission. He then wanders the streets of New York City for 3 days. He encounters a prostitute, bars, girls, and an old professor. At this point in his life, Holden does not have much faith in his fellow race. Even though at times Holden can seem a bit cynical and pesimistic, I liked him and related to him. For anyone who is a teenager, or been through thier teenage years, they can relate to the obstacles Holden faces in one way or another. Yes, the book has an excessive amount of foul language, but if you can see past it, you will find a wonderful story of three days of a teenage boys' life. I would recomend this book for any and everyone.

Summary: Drop dead, Holden Caulfield
Review: First of all, I can see why people might like this book. J.D. Salinger writes well, and this novel was certainly different from anything else being published at the time. However, I think this book [stinks]. Why? You see, the backbone of the book is the protagonist, the self-absorbed, shallow, wimpy, bitchy, neurotic Holden Caulfield. "Catcher in The Rye" is basically the ramblings of a lame character, and if you can't stomach Holden's incessant whining there is nothing else to enjoy.

Holden Caulfield is not someone I can relate to, nor do I see similarities between him and my peers. He's like the weirdo in high school you felt sorry for but made fun of anyway. I have absolutely no sympathy for Holden. He's a stereotypical rich, priviliged snob, and too stupid to realize that he's as affected and materialistic as the "phony" people he despises. Holden is depressed, I'll admit that. But instead of facing his problems, he gets kicked out of school, drinks too much, treats women poorly, and spends obscene amounts of money. What a role model. Let's not forget about his relationship with his kid sister, Phoebe. I don't understand why a sixteen-year-old boy would brag about his exploits to his prepubescent sister, burden her with his troubles, and pinch her bottom.

Is Holden Caulfield the voice of a generation? I hope not. He is undisputedly a depressed, hormonal teenager. He is not, however, hip, edgy or worth reading about. Holden Caulfield is, in his own famous words, completely and utterly "phony." I give this book two stars, only because I enjoyed J.D. Salinger's casual writing style.

Summary: Bad Book
Review: I can sum up this book very quickly. Whiney rich brat that thinks his life is horrid. I wish my life was as bad as his.

Summary: Fantastic book for young teenagers
Review: This book should be a coming of age ritual for all adolescents. I remember picking this up, in the dredge of hormone burst around fourteen or fifteen that left me with a constant snicker and cynicism I was not accustomed to feeling. Right away, the growing cynic in me began yelling "amen Holden preach on!" as he nailed those phonies for what they were and went it alone. Me and Holden, we had it all figured out. However, while reading the book a transformation and realization took place. The more I identified with Holden, the more I could see how his outlook was dragging him into a depression. I started to disagree with the outlook, and while sympathetic, I felt like there was something more to people. In a way, this book helped me grow up, helped me realize just how arrogant I was, how scared I was and how much of the world was left for me to discover. I have never found another book so perfect for the time of my life when I read it. A masterful work. A great painful gift that every young man should experience. The Catcher and The Rye showed me what a great book can do.

Summary: Cather and the Rye
Review: I read this book as part as my work for school. You would think a teacher might have to tell her students to read the book, but our class read in the middle os a lesson and she would tell them to put it down. She couldn't believe what she was saying. My class took this book apart, we looked at symbolism and why Holden acted that way. We read this book because it went with are theme. Are born evil or we made evil? J.D. Salinger answered that question. Holden was a product of his enviroment. This was an excellent book. I would recommend this book for anyone.

Summary: American Classic
Review: This is possibly the best book that I have ever read. What Holden tells the readers is not to be fooled by phonies. There is so much going on in this book, it's hard to believe. You think while reading it, it's just a cynical 16-year-old telling us about whats going on in his life, but there is a lot of symbolism. This is the classic "teenager coming of age" story, and every book like it should be judged by this.

Summary: Beautiful
Review: This was one of the best books I've ever read. The Catcher in the Rye is beautiful. I could totally relate to Holden, he was such a complex character; he actually seemed like a real person, something so hard to find in a book. I started the book two days ago, and finished it this morning. I was so disappointed when it was over; I didn't want it to end.

Summary: Like Looking in the Mirror
Review: And I thought I was the only cynical ... during high school. I am very sorry I waited until now to read this fine book. Holden mirrored many of the same feelings I had myself during that stage of my life. A concise, to the point, timeless piece of literature that people will identify with forever...if they are not being phonies!

Summary: One of the Best
Review: What can I say that has not already been said. The most telling thing for me is that absolutely everybody I have talked to about this book has loved it, not one dissenting vote in he bunch. One of the few you can read over and over and get something new out of it as your life progresses and changes.
