Rating: Summary: Excellent Despite Abrubt Ending Review: Reading "Catcher In The Rye" reminded me of waiting for a bus for about three hours, getting up to get the newspaper and then missing it. It wasn't that it was tedious, because I was hooked from nearly the beginning to the end, and it wasn't that it was poorly written, because J.D. Salinger wrote from the perspective of a confused and angry seventeen-year old so perfectly, I just about believed that Mr. Salinger was Holden Caufield. But after finishing the book, I was left with an unusual feeling that I couldn't quite put my finger on, until a day or two after reading the book. That feeling would have to be disappointment; the ending came a little too abruptly. I wish it would have continued into Holden's adult life. I would have liked to see what sort of places he would travel to, what adventures he would face and what people he would encounter. In conclusion, I thought "Catcher in the Rye" was an interesting and well thought out tale of innocence lost, and was clearly ahead of its time in philosophy and structure.

Rating: Summary: In short... Review: WELL, I STARTED READING TYHIS BOOK CAUSE OF ALL THE HYPE OVER IT... AND PLUS I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS ABOUT SOME DISENCHANTED TEEN, AND SO THE BOOK SOUNDED PERFECT FOR ME. I STARTED READING IT...AND YA, THE FIRST COUPLE OF PAGES WERE GOOD...THEN I READ SOME MORE. I STARTED WONDERING IF I HAD ALREADY READ IT, I MEAN IT'S SO DAMN PREDICTABLE CAUSE NOTHING HAPPENS, SERIOUSLY. I MEAN READ IT FOR YOURSELF, CAUSE THIS IS JUST MY OPINION...BUT TALK ABOUT A WASTE OF TREES! THE MAIN CHARACTER, HOLDEN, KEPT REPEATING HIMSELF, AND REPEATING HIMSELF...LOL. THIS SI-IiT BELONGS ON READING RAINBOW FOR GOD SAKES. THE SWEARING DIDNT BOTHER ME AT ALL...CAUSE A LOT OF TEENS SWEAR MORE THAN HOLDEN...INCLUDING ME. BUT IM REALLY ANGRY AT HOW THIS IS HOW ADULTS THINK WE TEENS ARE LIKE NOWADAYS...IT WAS PROBABLY GOOD IN THE 1940'S .... WELL WELCOME TO THE MILLENIUM LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... i mean, I deserve a PULITZER just for his review, compared to 'catcher'. here's a synopsis of the story: Holden Caulfield: Angst angst angst swear curse swear crazy crazy angst swear curse, society sucks... THE END
Rating: Summary: Just My Opinion Review: This will be the normal cliche reveiw for this book. I read it a year ago amazingly (in others opinions) at age 13. The book completly blew me away. It was the first book in my short life I could really relate to. It gave me a completly new out look on life. Catcher in the Rye also started my love afair for everything Salinger. If you haven't read this book it will change your life. Okay maybe not change your life but change the way you look at things. I know everyone will look at this reveiw and critque the poor writing ect. but it was written by a tired 14 year old girl. If you enjoyed this book check out everything else Salinger wrote. Also read A Sperate Peace by John Knowles (i think)and read The Bell Jar by Slyvia Plath. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to read this-Ashley
Rating: Summary: funny book Review: Funny book. I'd like to meet the kid who wrote it.
Rating: Summary: Horrid Review: This is the worst book that I have ever read. It has no point to it. There is no point in reading it. I cannot say how utterly dissapointed I am with the tripe that is held between the covers on this ripe stinker of a trash novel. The anti-story follows the innane details of a few days in the life of an idiotic self-involved sprat of a young boy. And that's about it... it ends as if forced, and is completely anti-climactic...
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Book Ever Written Next to the Bible Review: After 50 years in publication, and 25 years since I personally read this book for the first time, this book stands up. Whether read chronologically, or opened to any page, this book will make you think, laugh, reflect, and observe. Truly seen from the eyes of a sensitive adolescent on the verge of adulthood, this book captures the absurdity of every human nuance. Recommended to anyone who ever breathed.
Rating: Summary: A True, American Classic! Review: This is a GREAT book about adolescent alienation in the modern, capitalist world. The main character, Holden Caulfield, and the story itself, go deeper and deeper, and deeper as the story progresses, and finally leads to Holden's final, startling revelation. Along the way, Holden's soulful, pinched, inner life is revealed as it attempts to find moments of respite in the actual world ... the effect is that of one long, beautiful, shocking tone-poem, up until Holden's secret is revealed ... This is a fabulous book, and I highly recommend it to everybody.
Rating: Summary: Teen-Angst Before It Was Fad Review: "The Catcher in the Rye" is the story of sixteen year-old Holden Caulfield, a boy who goes to a prestigious boarding school and is flunking out--this is his fourth school he's been expelled from though and those around him are becoming agitated. Yet Holden is just a boy who thinks too much and has not fully grown into the world around him. Deciding that he is surrounded by "phonies" he runs away from his boarding school just before Christmas vacation and sinks his money from birthdays and Christmases into a hotel in New York. From there, in a course of only two short days, as he wanders around New York, we learn about what it is within life that makes it so unbearable for Holden, which really is not any one thing in particular. He doesn't like girls who are dumb, he doesn't like fakes, he doesn't like liars, he thinks it is wrong to have sex with someone you don't love, and he doesn't like it when people wish you good luck. Maybe Holden is just a spoiled rich kid and Salinger is just wasting our time with this seemingly plotless narrative, but I think Holden Caulfield describes precisely the type of kid who twenty years later will be contented and successful in life. His sarcastic commentary and slang-filled anecdotes will leave you prickling yet grinning at the same time. Holden has a sensitivity which is unpredictable in its sources: e.g. his younger sister, younger brother, next door neighbor; he feels bad that he worries those who care about him so much. This is a hard novel to read because it does not have much of a plot. However, I really liked Holden as a character because he shows us that depression and apathy are not just features of modern times, and his pain existed as teen-angst before it was fad. You will enjoy this book if you have empathy and patience.
Rating: Summary: Intelligent and Cynical, a Fantastic Read!! Review: I must say, I was awfully surprised at the number of negative comments that were left on this book. I happened across this book in the store and the clean-cut cover got my attention. I picked it up, knew it was a classic, and figured I ought to read it before I headed off to college. As soon as I started reading, I couldn't put it down! I was instantly drawn in to Holden's cynicism and wit. The book didn't have a twisting plot, but that is what makes it so great! It's a thought provoking book, for sure, so if that is what you are looking for in a book, read this! I must say, it's become my all time favorite book, right up there with To Kill a Mockingbird. This a fantastic classic, and after you read it, you'll know why.
