Rating: Summary: A Shopaholic for These Books! Review: Confessions of a Shopaholic is a great book for a lazy day. It is full of laughs and crazy situations; crazy situations that readers eventually realize they have been in themselves. In this book, you meet Becky Bloomwood, a complete shopaholic in denial. She views each purchase as an investment. Even when she thinks she might have a problem, in order to cut back on her spending, she ends up spending more! As a financial journalist, she gets herself in over her head when she gives out horrible advice to some neighbors. The book becomes a page turner as you keep reading to find out how in the world she will get herself out of that mess.I gave this book four stars, because although Sophie Kinsella is a new writer, she has started out very well. Her book is decent plot wise, but she makes up for the rest with her quick wit. She chose to write about something many people, mostly women, can relate to to some degree. She also takes what can be a huge financial problem for some people and makes it seem hilarious and not so huge. Sophie Kinsella has done a great job with this book, and I cannnot wait to read the other two in this trilogy. For me, and probably for many other people, this book was a great relaxer for me. There is no intricate, brainstimulating plot that you have to pay close attention to in order to follow. There is no complicated theme that you have to read into or big words you have to stumble through. With all the stress that busy people face everyday, this book gives them a chance to put all their problems behind them and relax. I fully recommend this book, although, mainly to women.
Rating: Summary: I'm confused as to how anyone could enjoy this novel Review: First of all, the main character is rather irritating, especially because she seems to force other people to go out on a limb for her selfishness (for example, the banks to whom she owes money and the future love interest who lends her money to buy a scarf that she claims is for a sick relative and her friend who makes frames for her). The book is a succession of tedious shopping lists stating prices and then many complaints of having no money. The only reason I continued in the torture of reading the book was due to the fact that I wanted to see character progression and find out if maybe she would become a better or at least more interesting person. It does not happen. She is rewarded for her selfish, irresponsible ways with a cute boyfriend and a sparkling future. Morality is nonexistant, coincidentally so is any trace of a plot. I would really have given it 1/2 a star, but that is not an option. Save your time and just skip this vapid, annoying novel.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining in its genre Review: Sophie Kinsella introduces us to Rebecca Bloomwood, a shopaholic if there ever was one. She writes for a financial publication, but dreams of writing for a fashion magazine instead. However, if she can't get a job writing about it, then she might as well go shopping! Very quickly, the reader will understand the extent of her "illness". Short on cash, bank managers and credit card companies send her multiple letters encouraging her to contact them in order to discuss her credit situation. Rebecca, refusing to surrender, tries out some advise she received: Spend less or make more money. As she tries to curb her spending, she runs into some trouble and realises that this might not be the best approach for her. She then attempts to make more money. This leads to some more interesting situations. As she seeks refuge from her creditors at her parent's house, her life will take an interesting turn (for the better, let's hope). This book makes for a fast, light summer read. Hopefully, you won't recognize yourselves too much in this character, but you will feel attached to her throughout the story.
Rating: Summary: The author read my diary! Review: Great fun read! I've now read all of the "shopaholic" books as well as "Can you keep a secret?", Sophie's latest novel (with new characters and new themes). I had the honor of meeting Sophie at Books Inc in San Francisco and she is a sweet, lovely and very self deprecating woman. The writing is fun and fresh...not the next Great American Novel but we all need some fun well written books like this...at least I do! FYI, Kate Hudson is involved with Sophie's latest book....Sophie has written a screenplay for "Can you Keep a Secret" and Kate will star and produce it as well.
Rating: Summary: For shoaholics! Review: This book is good for when you're upset and depressed and don't want to think about anything, because the protagonist of this story is a shopaholic- irresponsible, carefree, and funny; which is what we all want to be! It is also a good rationalization and cathartic for why we spend so much money on expensive, unneccessary things.
Rating: Summary: "A classic" Review: WOW! I have to say that this book is truly a hilariously delicious book, filled with laughs. I loved it. I recommended it to a friend who also thought it was great. I liked it so much I have already read all three of the Shopaholic books and am ready for the next. I loved Rebecca Bloomwood, she was the funniest character, and I can't say I'd blame her for her shopping troubles.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: I really enjoyed this novel and couldn't wait to pick up "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan," and "Shopaholic Ties the Knot." I made a midnight trip to Wal-Mart (which is about 20 minutes from my house)to pick up the next two because I wanted to continue on with the series. I was really bummed when Wal-Mart didn't have them; I couldn't wait another day to start up on "Manhattan." This is definitley an exciting book. Becky Bloomwood won't be forgotten!
Rating: Summary: Great Book To Read Review: Becky Bloomwood is just like me...she loves to shop! i thought it was sooo funny how she always thought to herself "i could win the lottery, and i could by these new shoes with the money". I loved this book, but it did get a little annoying how she didnt have that much common sense with her money skills. I would recommend this book to Girly Girls, because this is that type of book. I love how the author puts in bank notes from the bank saying like "you owe 237 pounds". Oh, and by the way, this book is set in London. I cannot read the sequel to this..."Shopaholic takes Manhatten". So, overall, i rate this book *4* stars !!
Rating: Summary: What Medicine For A Blue Mood! Review: Hit the libarary one day recently & got this & her sequel, "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan". A true pleasure to read!! Becky, our "unlucky" heroine is so REAL! I think most women can relate to her on some level, whether it be shopping, a little drink to ease the nerves- whatever the vice, we've been there, too! I can say I'm not a shopaholic, but found this book so silly, yet candid at the same time. If you need an escape from serious reading, PLEASE take a second glance at this. Very hard to put down! Btw--- I read all three in this "series" within two weeks, which is a record for me, as I have two toddlers, rofl....
Rating: Summary: A Fictional Book Worth Reading Review: I don't usually read fiction...a "waste of time" when I could be reading about the 'real' world or 'improving myself'...something actually useful. But when I read this series recommended by some younger friends, I was immediately hooked. Maybe I can see me in Becky..."me" to the extreme. Or maybe she is just a believable, likeable, hysterically imaginative character. I was totally entertained and sad when I finished the series. Yes, it's light, ridiculous, and just plain FUN! Can't wait for a movie--who would be good to play Becky?
