Summary: Amazingly well written
Review: The story starts off with three young boys - Jimmy, Dave and Sean. One boy gets into a car with 2 men who claim to be cops. the other two do not. What happens next changes their lives and frienships forever. The book speeds up to decades later when all three boys, who are no longer friends, are adults. Dave is a cop. Jimmy's daughter katie gets murdered. Suddenly all three men are forced together again by fate and forced to confront the demons of their past.
This book was really good. I saw the movie right after I finished reading it, and although the movie is great it doesn't do the book justice! That's how good the book really is. I was astonished at how well written this book is. There are many good storytellers out there- but not very many good writers! This book is 100% pure excellent writing. You can see exactly what is going on, you can hear their voices, you can smell and taste the world around them. Absolutely a must read!

Summary: Nail biting mystery
Review: Dennis Lehane weaves a wonderfully nail biting tragic mystery with excellent character portrayal and exciting plot build.

Dave Boyle, Sean Divine and Jimmy Marcus, three childhood friends divided by social boundaries and an incident that leaves them changed forever, must intersect their lives again as adults when Jimmy's daughter is found murdered in the city park.

Sean, now a detecive with the Boston State Police, is assigned to investigate the murder. He finds Dave Boyle's name on his witness list and questions him about the murder. Sean really doesn't think Dave has any knowledge of the murder but Sean's partner is totally convinced.... nor is Dave's wife. The wife that knows Dave's inner secrets and the demons that live in his head.

This was my first Lehane novel and I was impressed. I will definitely be picking up more novels by this author.

Summary: fantastic
Review: Lehane Brings The Charectors To Life In This Excellent Book. I Read It All And Than Saw The Movie. The Book Was Good But The Movie Was Better. I Enjoyed Them Both.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Engrossing
Review: This was the first Lehane novel I've ever read, and overall I was not disappointed. His characters literally seem to be sitting next to you - his talent for bringing them to life is truly astounding.

I was enthralled by the intriguing, complex way Lehane weaved the three estranged friends and the people they touched together.

I would've given this book five stars if it weren't for the ending and the outcome. Without saying too much, I felt cheated.

Summary: Not my kind of mystery
Review: Really tried to get interested in the book, read 3 chapters. The more I read, the less I liked the story, which rambles, and the language. Have never enjoyed reading foul language. Wonder if I can return it for something with some class and actual literary skill. Hummmmm guess I will have to ask Amazon about that.

Summary: Complex Characters!
Review: This is my first Dennis Lehane book and I'm hooked! His characters were so complex (flawed, yet sympathetic) and the story line moves along at a rapid pace. Just the right combination of characterization and plot. I found myself cheering for the ex-con/murderer and feeling sorry for the child molester--now that's writing. I have recommended this to my book club and anyone who'll listed and I'm getting ready to purchase several others. Excellent read...

Summary: Metaphor River
Review: I have just finished reading this excellent book, and I am tempted to go out and buy every one of Lehane's previous works.
While Lehane fleshes out his characters , mirrors every flaw,
the physical background of the story, the "landscape", so to speak, seems barren and empty ;I felt like the characters wer
living in a "vaccum", the neighborhood or environs seemed sterile,
although it did not affect the plot. I look forward to seeing the
movie and only hope that Eastwood doesn.t ruin it like the
movie " Blood Work", which he so loosely directed.

Summary: The Best Street Novel Since...
Review: This is the best streetwise novel that I have read since Clockers by Richard Price. The characters in Mystic River are deep and rich. People that you come to like and care about. As was the case in Clockers. These are people you can see and relate too, as if you live in the same town as them. By the way I also recommend Clockers with 5 stars and encourage people to avoid the movie and read this book also.

Summary: A Truly Reprehensible Book
Review: The novel can be summed up in the following hypothesis:

Child Molesters are bad.
Victims of child molesters become child molesters themselves.
Victims of child molesters are bad.

What is truly sad is that this is a well written novel but personally, I would have rather of read 'Mein Kampf.'

Summary: Fast-paced, wonderfully written thriller
Review: "Mystic River" is a real page-turner. Dennis Lehane tells a great tale of three ordinary men who knew each other as boys, then drifted apart.

The character development in "Mystic River" is very well done and is the best aspect of this book. Lehane probes into the subconscious thoughts of the main characters, and he lets us know what they're thinking. I especially liked the character of Celeste Boyle, Dave Boyle's long-suffering wife. The novel is very suspenseful. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

"Mystic River" was the first novel of Dennis Lehane's that I've read. I can't wait to read his other works.
