Rating: Summary: An unusual love story wedded with brilliant artwork & design Review: When I first heard good rants of the Griffin and Sabine Trilogy from my friend, I was inclined to read the series. And sure enough, I found Griffin and Sabine to be a vivid, gorgeous story in both context and design. The plot is simple and yet mysterious; a love story of two people living in the opposite ends of the world unfolded through letters and postcards...the unexpected twists in the book left me hanging and craving for more. Furthermore, the entire story allows you to open and read the letters other people (a taboo in real life), making the story even more surreal and exciting. An exotic love story wedded with whimsical artwork and an unusual format, Griffin and Sabine is a timeless winner that's sure to please the eccentric heart.
Rating: Summary: One of the most captivating trilogies ever written! Review: I see the world through the eyes of an artist always looking for beauty where few have found it before. In the Griffen and Sabine trilogy the beauty of the art is not hidden, but the true story is. This is best read aloud with more than one person present because with every new postcard or letter, more questions are raised than answered, and in essence, you become the narrator with a running dialouge between pages. I have also read far more than my fair share of romances, and must say that is by far the most intriuging I have ever read. I own books that I read and re-read, but these sit in my nightstand, always within reach becasue I read them so often. These works of art are far more than mere books; they are an experience which everyone deserves to have. Anyone who doesn't have a highly enjoyable time reading these books has to have lost their love of life and their belief in magic. Feel free to contact me about your theories on the trilogy's mystifying end. I will be happy to discuss.
Rating: Summary: A True Literary Experience Review: I have never before been so moved by a work of fiction. These books involve all of your senses, requiring a level of physical interaction with the work that pulls you into the story line. The ambiguity each book creates tugs at your intellect and your heart, pushing you to read further, yet the illustrations force your pause. It's a fantastic reading experience. I found myself simultaneously moved, inspired, and filled with hope.
Rating: Summary: Creative Use of Media Review: One thing I love about the trilogy is that you feel like you are reading another person's mail. You are spying in on this love story...and it is so much fun. When you turn a page, and come upon a letter in an envelope, opening it feels quite exciting. If you expect the storyline to wind through predictable territory, you will be disappointed. The vagueness of the plot makes you question the characters' reality and makes you hungry for every detail that is provided. Mr. Bantock does such a fantastic job with the story of Griffin and Sabine that you want to believe the couple actually exists. Yes, this is a fast read but if you are like me, you read it slow to savor each page of the book.
Rating: Summary: The best trilogy I have ever read! Review: The first time I saw this trilogy I thought " How great that will look on my bookshelf." Instead it opened a new concept in reading for me and my husband. He read the role of Griffin and I read the role of Sabine. It was so exciting that we couldn't wait to see what was going to happen to us or should I say G&S. The story was as intriguing as the way we went about reading it. Every night we would sit by the fireplace and open the letters in the book and read out loud, what a romantic gift for Valentines day or for no reason at all. The book is beautiful and Bantock is one of the most unique writers I have ever collected. This trilogy will open a whole new experience in reading for you and there are alot of surprises throughout. I wonder if you will figure it out before you get to the end. I promise you will become a Bantock fan for life. I have all his books, cards, address books etc and I love all of them. Buy your loved one a copy of this trilogy and read it like we did. After all it will give you some quality time together while fantasizing that you are Griffin and Sabine.
Rating: Summary: A must have! Review: This trilogy is a must have for your library and makes a wonderful gift! The story is intriguing and Bantock is one of the most unique writers I have ever read. You will love these books and all the surprises they offer.
Rating: Summary: Eye-pleasing and inquisitive Review: I used to work at a bookstore and I recall the day when a customer ran into the store frantically searching for Griffin and Sabine. She was buying it as a present for someone and couldn't stop talking about the beautiful art of the letters and postcards. Curious, I read it, and was not disappointed. As I read the Griffin and Sabine books, I felt as if I were a part of their interaction, and looking through a scrapbook of actual writings. I smiled, grinned, and cried my way through the pages. The correspondence is detailed enough that you get a really good sense of the storyline and it inspired me to write my own correspondence similarly (even decorate them as such! I get amazing compliments). The art is whimsical, reflecting the mood of each letter and postcard.. it is impressionistic, abstract, and surreal. Artists like Escher, Dali, and John Pitre float through my mind as I flip through the books. The best reason to buy the set: this will save you the time it takes to order the other books immediately. Warning: You will wish ALL your penpals were artists after this!
Rating: Summary: Perfect, delicious, entertainment Review: If you ate the most perfect dinner ever prepared as you read this book--savoring the flavors and scents--you might never recover from the sensory overload. The trilogy stimulates your eyes, your intellect, your imagination, your secretly hidden romantic, and the child inside you stops pretending to be grown up while you read. Amazing. There is no book like this. Each letter is brief but crafted meticulously. The plot jumps forward with each letter and postcard provoking and delighting. Nick Bantock's art is astonishing. Most impressive of all is the way in which the narrative and the art are interdependent -- one cannot exist without the other.
Rating: Summary: the artwork rocks too . . . Review: i read these when i was 11 or 12, im sure now that i missed a lot of the messages in the story, but i still managed to love them . . . which tells me, the letters in these books weave a few complicated plots, yet they can still be enjoyed by anyone wanting to take the simple route to understanding them. I look back on them now, finding all the things i missed before and making my own theories about them; either way you choose to enjoy this tale, youll find yourself reflecting on it and enjoying its puzzle even more for a long time afterwards.
Rating: Summary: Hello Sabine....I am in search.... Review: Of course, until then I have thoroughly enjoyed this box set in pristine condition...May the road rise to meet all those that were on the VOD team. Rusty
