Rating: Summary: I Love this BOOK! Review: This book was extremely good. I loved it! I reread it and did a project on it for school and each time I read it, it still provoked the same emotions and feelings. I also loved the author's note because it truly explained the purpose of the book which isn't the case with a lot of books. I admired the way the characters lept off the page. GO GET THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: In the Time of the Butterflies Review: I read this book in my AP english class and it was the only good book I read. For all teachers out there, and everyone else, this book is destined to become a classic. Everyone in my class loved it, even the boys. It shows the hardship that people go through at war and it brings the reader in. If you read this book give Dede a chance at the begining, because the other sisters are a lot more interesting. Knowing a little Spanish will also help when reading this book.
Rating: Summary: I really wanted to like this book. Review: This one was a struggle. A friend recommended it and I wanted to like it, but I continually got bogged down. There was one chapter in particular, at el jefe's banquet, that had me enthralled. Too often, however, I had trouble continuing along through overly precious journal entries and other seemingly endless diversions from the narrative.
Rating: Summary: Do NOT pass up this book! Review: This is one of my absolute favorite books. It paints such a perfect picture of life in the Dominican Republic under Trujillo, I feel like I studied it for years. The characters are so well developed I feel like I knew them. In spite of knowing the ending from the moment I read the back cover, my heart raced and my hands were sweating when I reached the book's climax. Read this book, you will NOT be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Mariposa Review: This is one of the best books that I have had the pleasure of reading. I loved it so much that I have read it twice, and plan to read it again. Alvarez draws you into the book and doesn't let you go until the last page. I have never read a book before where you know the end at the beginning, but it worked wonderfully. Even though I knew the end result from the start of the book, it was still very emotional. The lives of these women were remarkable, and they should be remembered and honored.
Rating: Summary: Female Heroes Review: This is a wonderful story which blends the themes of family loyalty, female courage and freedom into an entertaining and heartwarming book. I was introduced to the book through a woman's book club and was immediately absorbed into the four Miribal sisters' stories. The book is unique in that it each chapter tells the story from a different sister's point-of-view without overlapping the plot. It was amazing to see the courage these sisters possessed during their struggle to bring democracy to the Dominican Republic. It is evident that the thread that held these sisters together was their dedication to the revolution and their love and devotion to one another.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Brilliant Work! Review: I thought this was a fabulous tale of love, hardship, and war... everything one would discover in the journey of life..rolled into one magnificent novel! Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Freedom Review: Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies is an excellent portrayal of the Dominican Republic at the time. For social work purposes, this book is very good at describing characters, coping skills, community and family :)
Rating: Summary: Pink Revolution Review: I appreciated the fact that, the author could so beautifully intertwine the harsh, cold, brutal fight of the revolution with the passions of the women involved for their husbands, their children, and for one another.
Rating: Summary: For the lover of lyrical writing... Review: Alvarez will blow you away with this novel. It is a touching story that alegorically displays all sides of a revolutions thorugh each of the four sisters. Not only is the theme and plot of the book amazing, Alvarez's rhetoric is also breathtaking.
