Summary: Author Extraordinaire
Review: Julia Alvarez has a style unlike anyone I've ever read. Each of her books has taught me more about life and myself than I thought I could have ever understood. She has allowed me to live a life I would have never known. I recommend each of her books with 5 stars, but read them in order. You can never be disappointed. I diligently watch for a new title to hit the shelves.

Summary: In the name of Politics
Review: Julia Alvarez's powerful novel about four sisters and their involvement in the political turmoil that haunted the Dominican Republic was a moving and interesting read. While the "butterflies" are looked upon almost as legends today, Julia Alvarez gives the characters real personalities and feelings. Their strength against Trujillo is only a part of the story, as the reader is introduced into their everyday lives. With every problem and joy, the reader connects with the characters on a human level. The Mirabel sisters become a symbol of strength for the readers , and hopefully this story will be remembered by all as not only a fiction piece, but a piece of history as well.

Summary: It happened in the Dominican Republic
Review: Fictionalized account of the Mirabel sisters, martyred during the struggle against the dictator Trujillo, this book is a real masterpiece. The author has a style of writing able to communicate powerful emotions whether of fear in the prison scenarios or sensuality in the women's descriptions of their men.
A story of how ordinary people become involved in political struggle in spite of themselves.

Summary: it brought me to tears
Review: I have to say that this book was the best book I have ever read. My parents are both from the Dominican Republic and reading this book made me understands their struggles, and the rest of my family's struggles during the time of Trujillo. I truly do recommend this book to all Dominicans, I believe it is essential to be read. Even if you aren't Dominican, I do recommend this book because it truly makes you appreciate the freedom that you do have here. In the end the book brought me to tears -- but I am so glad I read it, because it helped me connect better with my parents in a way I never thought I would.

Summary: This Book was Great!
Review: Well, I'm from the Dominican Republic (but I reside in USA), and of course I know about the Mirabal Sisters.
Is a sad story, we all know...but they made us free!
I'm only seventeen, and "I'm not supposed" to be interested in my own history..That's what people think!
I went to visit their museum in Ojo de Agua, Salcedo, is not that far from where I used to live.
When you go there, you feel like if you were going back to the past.
Well, the only thing I want to say is that, I am Dominican!!, I'm very proud of it!, I'm glad because the Mirabal were heroins for us!

Summary: The Courage Of TheHuman Spirit
Review: Julia Alvarez's book In the Time of the Butterflies is a compelling story of 4 sisters and their strrugle through political oppression under the dictator Trujillo. The book pulls the reader into the world and every day life of the Mirabal sisters with just enough detail to keep you turning the pages for more. The story is funny, warm, and heartbreaking all at the same time. The book expresses the culture, couage, strength, and love of all the four sisters with beautiful language, at times like poetry. Alvarez's use of some spanish language intertwined with the english helps the reader indentify even more with the characters. This is definitely a story all people should make the time to hear. It teaches that the courage and love of the human spirit can overcome anything.

Summary: Review of Butterflies
Review: Julia Alvarez's book, In the Time of the Butterflies, is an excellent story of the Mirabal sister's courage and spirit. This book is based on the real life Mirabal sisters, who were murdered because of a plot against Trujillo, the harsh dictator of the Dominican Republic. The story is written from the point of view of each sister. Stylistically this is amazing. I was captivated; it is almost like the reader is listening to the stories of the four sisters from their own mouths. Turning the pages of this book was the easiset ting I've ever done. I learned about a time period in a country that I had no previous knowledge of. Although the reader knows the fate of the sisters from the beginning of the novel, you are left thinking of the story of these courageous women all day. I recommend this book to anyone, it is truly an inspiring novel.
