Summary: Easy enough start into philosophy
Review: Although it gets a bit dusty and rough to read in the end, I like "Sophie's world" for the two story lines it tells at the same time and the way the author leads them to a meeting point. I never had an easier entrance to understanding old and modern philosophy. If it wasn't for the last section of the novel I would have given it five stars.

Summary: Devilishly clever
Review: Great storyline.....really informative.....excellent!!

Summary: Interesting and enlightening but odd...
Review: I loved the book, but only after I'd read it twice. The writing style seemed a bit jejune, like something was lost in the translation, or perhaps it was intentional. "Sophie" herself seemed a bit one-sided--not a character one can sympathize with until towards the end of the book. Once I got into it, I began skimming the philosophy sections to learn what would happen to Sophie! I think that overall, the transitions from philosophy lectures to plot could have been accomplished more smoothly.

Summary: You won't know who 'Sophie' really is until towards the end
Review: This book gives the reader an introduction about the thinkings of the early philosophers. It's good for a beginner to philosophy. However, some sections are quite lengthy.

The surprise of this book comes when you finally knows who 'Sophie' is towards the end of this book.

The Chinese version of this book is also very interesting.

Summary: Philosophy is the authentic food for your soul
Review: Even though this is not the best book for an introduction to the history of philosophy (as not intended), it certainly will help teenage readers make a better start for their spiritual life. As Socrates said, "unexamined life is not worth living," this book will make the young readers' life worth more. I am in the middle of reading a similar book for adults, and I think you'd better also read that one if you think Sophie's World is interesting but not very substantial in its philosophical contents. That book uses adventure stories in Virtual Reality as a means for conveying philosophical ideas. It's so exciting and enlightenning! It's called: Get Real: A Philosophical Adventure in Virtual Reality, brand new, also available here.

Summary: An Excellent book explaining the history of philosophy!!
Review: I am only 14 and I found Sophie's World very, very interesting. The book is really, really good. The only down turn of this book is that it took a while to get a bit more exciting. Overall this book is excellent but is 'Gaarder' a guy or a girl I do not know.

Summary: An excellent book
Review: I thought this has got to be one of the most brilliant books I have ever read in my life....it is soooo interresting..I mean the ideas that some of teh philosophers came up with were just out of this world...BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!

Summary: Very Impressive!
Review: In my opinion, Sophie's World is one of the best books I have ever read. I reccomend it to anyone who refuses to take things in life for granted. This novel gives many different perspectives on many different topics which past philosophers have thought about and which present-day thinkers still ponder. Most importantly, the construction of the story is such that it allows readers to decide for themselves what they believe in. The author's views are not forced down a readers throat, which is a major detracting factor found in many books and courses on philosophy. This novel is an excellent starting point for one's study of past philosophers and philosophy in general.

Summary: In Praise of Philosophical Novels
Review: I really love philosophical novels because they usually mix the intriguinng details of everyday life and the most profound questions about humankind and more:in my opinion, professor's Gaarder "Sophia's World" is one of the best works with Klaas Hiuzing's novels " Der Buchtrinker " and "Das Ding an sich" which I am afraid are not available in English yet...

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The best book i have ever read
