Summary: An amazing, and sometimes complex story
Review: I found this book both incredibly easy to understand, and surprisingly complex. It started out slow but interesting, and quickly became more and more compelling. The way that the two people's lives slowly became entwined really got to me...I found myself wondering who existed and who didn't. The story left me with many questions, both about the book and myself. I would recommend it to anyone who was willing to read about such a confusing topic.

Summary: Pure stimulation
Review: A young girl's common existence is interrupted by a strange journey through the development of western philosophy, from the first mythologists to modern nihilism. As Sophie learns from a mysterious mentor, every new reality gives way to to another. Gaarder elegantly questions perception in a manner that would make Kant grin. Sophie's World is rich with ideas and entertainment. Anyone who has believed that philosophy is inaccessible should take trip to Sophie's World

Summary: My favorite book in years!!!!!!
Review: I was so impressed with this book that I went out and immediately bought twelve copies and shipped them to friends all over the country so they could share the experience with me. The history of philosophy interspersed throughout this book is amazingly accessible and thoroughly readable. The plot within a plot within a plot engages the reader from the very first page driving you on to find out what will happen next to the incredible cast of characters. My only regret is that I will never be able to have the experience of reading this book for the first time again

Summary: Philosophy, mystery and history all rolled into one book!
Review: An amazing concept for a book. It's a mystery story (who is the mysterious philosophy teacher?), a history of philosophy told in terms that are both simple to understand and deeply thought provoking. It also leaves the reader with a myriad of intellectual conundrums. This has to be one of the most fascinating books of recent times.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: This is the most fantastic book that I have ever read. You are transported, page by page, to the human's history and feel the wisdom in your hand.

Summary: Thought provoking
Review: After completing the novel Sophie's World, my soul was touched lightly by the pen of the author. The book is a game of sorts, a parady of life that tries to bring Truth to the reader but not by any ordinary means. S/he attempts to join traditional pedantic methods of learning with the artistic. S/he has a firm understanding of the difference between a common dichotomy running throughout our culture: observer versus participant, knowing versus feeling, cardboard versus credible, bounded versus unbounded, telling versus showing, etc.

I respect the attempt of the work, despite that the characters were not realistic to me. And perhaps that was the point. The characters were after all only characters. . . .

Summary: Manna from heaven - at last a lucid look at life's puzzles.
Review: This book combines all the elements that grab me and ensnare me,viz.suspense, mystery, intellectualising but in an accessible form. I've always wanted to learn more about the history of philosophy but it is a severely daunting subject usually encased in great tomes that intimidate far more than they entice. Jostein Gaarder makes one wonder why everyone else always over complicated the matter. I wish I could be chosen as someone's Sophie and could enter a world of wonder and discovery, constantly being stimulated towards deeper understanding of our un-understanding.

Summary: An easy-to-swallow history of philosophy couched in mystery.
Review: History of philosophy? What was I thinking when I bought this book? I put off reading it for several weeks--until I had no other unread books to divert me. Finally I cracked the cover and began to read...and was hooked! From mystery to mysterious, this book turns and twists and taught me about the history of philosophy in a very real way. What is real

Summary: One of the best books I've ever read.
Review: It just so happens that I'm taking a course in school called "The history of philosophy", so when I started reading "Sophie's World", I expected something along the lines of what I was doing there. It wasn't. Gaarder can make the most complex ideas seem, if not perfectly simple, at least understandable. I'm currently reading this book for the third time in a few months, and I keep finding new things. My advice: if you haven't read it yet, do it fast!
