Summary: STORY OF O..
Review: WRITTEN VERY "EUROPEAN", THE STORY LINE IS DECENT, THE S AND M IS MOSTLY WHIPPING, IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A HOT READ TRY BLUE THE COLOR OF DESIRE, WHICH IS A LITTLE MORE RAW. IF YOU WANT A MORE TAME READ THIS MIGHT BE FOR YOU. I PERSONALLY DONT FIND DESCRIPTIONS SUCH AS "FLANKS" AND "NETHER REGIONS" TOO STIMULATING.

Summary: This may be a BDSM classic, but I found it silly.
Review: This is the "classic" which started most of the current BDSM literature. I find it extreme and rather silly overall. The sad thing is that I have also seen too many people try to model themselves and their activities on this book, which can be both mentally and physically dangerous--I have personally known some of these types.

Summary: So why does she do it?
Review: It seems that most people end up reading The Story of O because someone tells them to.

The basic premise of the story is that O's lover, Rene, sends her off to a secret chateau to have her trained in the ways of slavehood. The story evolves from there.

While this book is interesting in that it gives an insight into the BDSM scene and the types of characters that may populate it, no insight is ever given into O's mind. Considering she is the main character, this is rather frustrating. Obviously she has the option to leave the relationship (and equally obviously, she stays), but we are never given the opportunity to find out exactly what she gains from her liaison with Rene, and later, Sir Stephen or whether any of her needs are met.

Being in the lifestyle myself, I found that this book left many questions unanswered. Then again, I'm not into humiliation and debasement--but I would have appreciated finding out exactly what O gets from her life as a slave.

Summary: Real life presented in an acceptable fiction
Review: The Story of O is accepted in the book market as an erotic fiction. To some it may be. To others, with the required exposure, it is the legitimization of lifestyles for the elite few existing in the South and Europe for a very long time. It is the story of submissive women trained in the care of dominant women (like Marie) for the male Masters they serve. It is not about crimes, or morals, or forced servitude, or slave markets. Every act is voluntary by every individual. It is about roles, and specifically sexual roles, in a society of choice. It is the type of society in which only those free to choose could meet the needs of all. While the choices once would have surprised the general population, today Americans would be more willing to accept them as true free choices made by people with the right to make them. It deals with the pleasure of creating pleasure.

No doubt, the book is very erotic, as is much of life. However, once the erotic nature of the book has been enjoyed, please reread this classic work from the perspective of roles and specifically submission, responsibility, and true caring. It will make you much more than just a better lover. You might just find your role in life.

Summary: Another good book...
Review: (I said 1 star for T.S.O.O. because I haven't read it yet). But, I have been reading a true crime book called "Perfect Victim" by Christine McGuire. It is about the story of Colleen Stan. She was kidnapped by a married couple in the late 70's while hitchiking to California from Oregon. She was then kept as a slave in there home for the seven years before escaping. It has definetly been a hard book to put down! That is where I first heard of "The Story Of O". It was the husband's favorite movie. So I thought I would look into it. Maybe you might be interested in "Perfect Victim" too.

Summary: All depends
Review: This little 'review' is written after only having read the two first chapters. The book is just 'too much' for me.

After having get her 'addicted' to cruel sex games in the castle (first chapter), where she gets beaten up until she bleeds and cries after her 'lovers' leave the room in addition to being unable to keep her urine up because of severe kidney damage caused during the 'love' games, she loses all sense of selfworth and selfesteem in the second chapter, where she starts getting so 'messed up' that she tells her lover "I love you, please make of me what you want but please don't leave me, my God, please don't leave me". I just wonder which real woman who loves herself could ever fall so low to be willing to give up everything and most importantly herself for her 'lover' who prostitutes her.

...

In brief, i'm quite disgusted after the first two chapters. This is not about love or sex on the edge, but about psychological and emotional rape. Although one can say she does it all out of free will, it feels as if they made her 'addicted' to it in the first place.

Definitively not for the paint of heart.

Summary: A beautiful and lurid tale of pleasure and pain
Review: I have developed an interest in BDSM novels and I was told that I ought to read Story of O, for it is the stick that other novels of this sort are measured. I had to give it a whirl. Story of O is a beautiful and lurid tale about the fine line between pleasure and pain. O feels extreme pleasure from the pain that her master inflicts onto her. O is aware that she can walk out of the situation if she wants to, but the domination/submission that she practices gives her a freedom from choice -- unlike her everyday life. I love the irony in the story. Story of O develops into a strange but erotic romance between the protagonists. This book blew me away. Fan of BDSM? Pick up Story of O. My friend was right -- this novel is the stick that which other erotic novels are measured!

Summary: Finding a Classic "O"
Review: I first read Story of O in 1975 when I was 14 and I was fascinated. The imagery is beautifully erotic. I watched the cut video in 1983 which I enjoyed but my new husband was appalled. I revere the descent to the limit by O and have always held her in a tender part of my heart. Her course is not mine but having experienced the story, my life is richer. I have ordered the uncut video and keep the book in amongst my regular novels & gardening books. It's interesting when someone will see it and they have a choice whether to comment or keep silent. I think one can read and appreciate the story without agreeing to its activities. I reccommend it for others to read & collect.

Summary: Awful
Review: This book makes me ill. I don't see how anyone can read it. I only got through the first few chapters and decided it was not worth reading.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Not for everyone
Review: If you can't see yourself in this book, then it's not the book for you.

If you can, however, then you will appreciate the beautiful writing and allow the book to stretch your imagination to its outer limits.
