Rating: Summary: Truly Unique Writing Review: If you're sick of reading "happily-ever after" crap, this is the book to read. The writing style is unlike any I have ever read; brutally honest, slightly surreal, and hilarious all at the same time. You don't know whether to laugh or cry or be horrified, but you do know you want to find out what happens next. I had no trouble at all with the unconsecutive style; it keeps you on your toes and forces you to piece together a very bizzare puzzle. Is it weird? Yes. Is it gruesome at times? Yes. Does it push your sensitivities to the limit? Yes. And isn't that what we want in a book? I know I do.
As a first-time Palahniuk reader, I have to thank my sick and twisted brother for recommending this book. I was left with a sense of almost giddy shock upon finishing this highly disturbing book, which was surprising and refreshing (most of the time it's more of a "well, that's over" feeling). For those less sensitive readers, Choke is a great successor; the first few chapters will demonstrate just how perverse Palahniuk can be)!
Rating: Summary: A playful romp through self-multiating nihilism Review: Some of the plot twists (and there are several) seem a bit forced, and even by the denouement they start to seem cliché, but almost immediately they begin to actually seem to make sense, and not be pulled out of thin air.
The stream-of-consciousness writing can be hard to follow sometimes, but once the rhythm is firmly established it becomes natural.
The imagery is particularly strong, particularly in how Palahniuk manages to paint a very vibrant, complete picture with the bare minimum of words. Many literary devices are also used to firmly establish the tone and cadence, which makes it all the more gripping.
If you liked Fight Club at all and actually got the meaning without being caught up in the message, I would definitely recommend reading Invisible Monsters.
Rating: Summary: Chuck's Classic Voice Screams Through Review: "A Great Book, Alex" - Charlie Brewster, Fright Night II
And it is great. A novel about a model who agonizes and depresses over a driveby hitting her, shattering her jawbone and disabiling her speach and career. She loses all hope and travels down the wrong path of life for the next year. The story is about that year, with her fiance leaving and sleeping with her best friend, to her parents freakingly denying her brothers death years ago, dead of aids. She tumbles and twists to tell you this tale and the classic voice of Chuck Palahniuk screams through, unraveling the creativeness he always has been good at. Read this novel.
Rating: Summary: kinky twister Review: This is probably my favorite of CP's books. His humor is crass and calculated, the characters falling into the story as the reader pieces the plot together. Models, drag queens, sex and fame. The many flashbacks and flashforwards may leave you spinning, but it's worth the ride.
Rating: Summary: HOLY CRAP! Review: This book is one I haven't stopped thinking about since I finished it 2 days ago. It is my favorite book by Chuch Palahniuk and possibly my favorite book ever. Palahniuk builds characters that though you find them twisted and ridiculous, you can't help but empathize with them and feel like you know them. His writing style is unlike anything I've read prior.
The twists in this book are so shocking and bizzare. When I read the biggest twist in the book, I nearly dropped the novel right out of my hands.
I think the hardest part of reading this book was havnig no one to discuss it with since no one I know has read it yet. I just have to talk about it, it's that good!
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a crazy, page turning read.
Rating: Summary: Palahnuk too fast for me. Review: I don't like criticizing Chuck because I really
enjoyed a few of his novels (Fight Club being
one of them). But Invisible Monsters is just
so... so out there! In a bad way, I mean. OK,
his social commentary is excellent and his style
is unique(whatever that means), but the guy writes
like a foot soldier under heavy fire! Maybe...
maybe I'm the guy who's a little slow. But like
I said, the guy's too fast for me.
Rating: Summary: Not spoon-fed story telling... Review: There are a number of thorough reviews for this novel. And some fantastic thoughts. Not so much reviewing as I am sharing my personal experience.
So many proclaim to have gotten lost reading this, that they didn't know what was going on...
Hahaha Swear that I was lost, too. Three chapters in, put it down for a few days. Then decided that I trusted this author's writing. So, treated it like a rollercoaster, letting it take me up and down and in and out--and queezy and short of breath at the end--I was hit, hard, winded, with a finish that still has a dazzling effect on me. A brave write. And fantstic closure. Not spoon-fed story telling. You won't catch much until you are shown. Trust.

Rating: Summary: this book is pulchritudinous Review: Shannon McFarland is absolutely captivating. Chuck Palahniuk writes in a way that people think. He is superbly tuned in to a way of writing that makes people want to read. Read This Book.
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: Invisible Monsters is the second book I read of Chuck Palahniuk's. The first being Lullaby. I went into this book with high hopes because I thought the plot sounded very interesting. I was not at all dissapointed. It had drama, it had comedy, and it had violence. It was extremely entertaining with a great ending.
Between the time I finished the book and now I've gotten three other people to read this book, each of them loved it. So this is definitly a must-read!!!
