Rating: Summary: Entertaining Southern Tale Review: This is the second in the "Miss Julia" series by Ann B. Ross, and though this isn't quite as hilarious as the first book, this is still an funny, entertaining, and quite true-to-life story of an older Southern woman and her escapades in a tiny North Carolina town. There is a whole crew of characters, both charming and quirky, who are very nicely developed. The story has some elements of a mystery, but is more funny than suspensful. The protagonist, Miss Julia, is one of the most hilarious characters in Southern novels.
Rating: Summary: A quick and funny read. Review: This second book in the Miss Julia series is an amusing, quick read.Miss Julia is a fairly recent widow, who is quietly glorying in the freedoms that widowhood has brought. In defiance of her stuffy neighbours in a small Southern town, she has refused to be bullied into handing over the control of her quite substantial fortune to the elders of her church and also horrifed them by taking in her late husbands mistress,Hazel Marie and her son, Little Lloyd.Under her care, they have both blossomed and the three of them have formed a close family unit. When Hazel Marie's scheming uncle plots to have Little Lloyd given into his care, the better to gain control of the childs inheritance, Hazel Marie is kidnapped, forcing Miss Julia to hire a private detective to find her.It does tend to become a touch farcical at this point with plots littered with crooked racing car drivers, shonky church fund raisers and Miss Julia driving around a Nascar circuit and out- driving the professionals.I didn't think that this book was as good as the first, but hopefully, M/S Ross will be back to form with book 3.
Rating: Summary: Good clean fun... even if you're not a NASCAR fan Review: This second installment of Miss Julia's adventures and is as fun as the first. Little Lloyd is a great kid; he and Miss Julia's housekeeper Lillian, succeed in bringing out the best in Miss J. I would expect that without them, Miss Julia would be just an old embittered prune. This unlikely cast of characters seemingly brings out the best in one another. Likewise, they cast a stern light on those who are just a little too real and just a little too scary: Pastor Ledbetter just has to have a white belt with matching white shoes and an ill fitting toupee. I just can't imagine him without. Enjoy: this is just good clean fun
Rating: Summary: Miss Julia the Sequel Review: This story took a little longer to get into than the first (Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind), and in the first chapters I found Miss Julia a little trite and annoying. But once the plot got fired up, I was once again in love with her character. The scene where she outraces the bad guys on the NASCAR racetrack is the best in the book. I read the first two books back to back, and, while I enjoyed them both, I think I will take a break before picking up Miss Julia III.

Rating: Summary: another hilarious Miss Julia adventure Review: When Hazel Marie doesn't return from a movie date with Wilson T. Hodge, Miss Julia sets out to find her. Unable to get the proper help from the police department, she hires the private investigator, J.D. Pickens. Insisting on tagging along while he tries to find Hazel Marie, Miss Julia finds herself in all sorts of interesting situations as they follow the trail of clues. Just as funny as Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind, this book is completely hilarious and entertaining.
Rating: Summary: A Rocking Chair Read Review: When you read this book, I suggest you sip on a tall glass of lemonade and sit in rocking chair...hmmm, heaven. I loved Miss Julia. She made everything alright, as most Southern Women can do.
Rating: Summary: Zany and fast-paced Review: Zany and fast-paced like McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD, and full of charm like Flagg's FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, this book is chocked full of colorful and eccentric characters that leap off the page and into your heart. The physical descriptions of the characters alone are worth the price of admission and not to be missed. Couple this with great writing and a sense of timing (not everyone has one) and you've got yourself a great read. Highly recommended. Also recommended: McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood and FGT
