Rating: Summary: This one keeps you in the chair while dinner burns! Review: I read this book years ago and it still remains with me. Gabriel's writing is breathtaking. A love story of many dimensions, the book drains you emotionally but puts back more than it takes out. How does Marquez do this? Marquez lives in Cartagena, Colombia which serves as the setting for the book. He does justice to this lovely city. If you love superb writing, a knock-out love story and intriquing characters, this book is a must.
Rating: Summary: my favorite Review: Marquez's books are often hard to get into but i found love in the time of cholera to be deeply involving and a wonderful piece of literature Marquez's eloquent style of writing only adds to the appeal of a book about the celebration of life and all its facets.
Rating: Summary: Love in every incarnation. Review: This book deeply affected me. Everyone has their own particular definition of love and the people in this story are no different. You follow them through their long lives as they discover what love means to them and what paths it makes them take. I found myself relating to characters I did not like, to people I would never associate with. In this timeless story I discovered things about myself and the people in my life, while following the souls within the story's pages. That must truly be the mark of fine art.
Rating: Summary: A human book Review: The most beautiful book that i ever read. The love trough the years doesn't change, and it remains constant. There are no words to describe a spiritual thing like love, but Garcia Marquez does it in the most closer way.
Rating: Summary: The best book from one of the century's great authors Review: A beautiful work of fiction and a splendid example of magical realism from one of the century's great authors. This book is much better than his other highly acclaimed work, 100 Years of Solitude, and is full of the the style of magical realism that makes ordinary events seem extraordinary. This is due to the lush nature of his writing. The book details a man's 50 year obsession with a woman he cannot have and the hilariously funny ways he lives his life in spite of it. It also chronicles the more ordinary life of the woman he obsesses about and her doctor husband. In the end, the poor obsessed gentleman does get the girl, but the beauty of the story is in the details. Indeed the story is almost of secondary importance, just sit back and enjoy Marquez's writing. One of my all time favorite books and an enduring testament to love and its many forms that are chronicled in the story.
Rating: Summary: I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this novel... Review: "Love in the Time of Cholera" was one of those rare unforgettable books that has the ability to depict how we can find the extraordinary within the everyday interactions of our lives. Garcia Marquez makes the reader feel the intense emotions of the characters flawlessly. This book moved me in a way that most novels have not been able to. PLEASE read it!
Rating: Summary: very well written, but at times boring... Review: Gabriel Garcia Marquez has an enviable ability to describe any banal situation in ways that most of us couldn't even dream. This book was more interesting to read for the writing style than for anything else. The characters were nearly interesting, and the plot was similar. He didn't quite live up to his reputation, however (not for me, anyway).
Rating: Summary: A book to be read once a year Review: This book was written with so much passion such that it evokes hauntingly supressed yet exploding emotions. It transforms the world of the reader to world of the characters which makes it so enriching to read. Experience the magic it gives!
Rating: Summary: busy artist with no time to read Review: Among the FEW reviewers who did NOT like this book I noticed the content was their problem - all those affairs this fellow had while hoping and waiting for his true love until her husband died and they were both tottering into their 70's. But whether youth or OLD age Garcia Marquez WRITES ! His prose is like a painting where every square inch glows with exotic color and every juktaposition surprises you: descriptions turned inside out. No, I did not like the leud parts - I suppose it sells - but this book is alive with poetry of the soul, with poetry of human experince. I read it over and over. I have no time to read, but this one has become as essential as a good meal.
Rating: Summary: I can read this book all my life... Review: I've read this book years ago. I think it's perfect. Now I open it somewhere and start reading- with pleasure and every time I think: Thank you Marquez for your incomparable talent you shared with us.
