Rating: Summary: Fabulously entertaining and rich in intricate detail! Review: Garcia Marquez makes the art of the illusionistic surreal seem realistic at the pace of a snail. Fabulously written, the book takes you through a journey of unparalleled proportions that you have probably never been on. a delightful read,an intimate and sincere look at the characters give the reader the feeling of being one with the characters. you almost feel as if you are one of Dr.Urbino's patients. a must read for an enthusiast of life.
Rating: Summary: Illness and aging and a great love story Review: We don't expect to hear about the ailments and not so sexy bodily fluids of our heroes and heroines, but here they are, from Fermina Daza's diarrhea to Florentino Ariza's constipation to the smell of Juvenal Urbino's urine. We watch them lose their hair, get fat and wrinkle. Yet we love them, and we love the way they love each other.
Rating: Summary: It's language and picture you can taste Review: Love In the Time of Cholera goes beyond story telling... It reaches into your stomach and tickles what's there. It swims in your fingers and you feel as if you don't have to hold the book; the book no longer exists. It's the flavor of love, commitment, dedication, pain, sadness, happiness and spirit. It brings you far from Macombo to the lives of a man and woman held together through fifty years of seasoning. Remarkable.
Rating: Summary: I can't recall being so moved by a book Review: I loved One Hundred Years of Solitude and if I think about the two novels I would say that it is a more impressive novel than Love in the Time of Cholera, broader in scope, mixing political, historical and personal themes. etc. Yet, I can't get "Love" out of my mind. I don't recall ever being so moved by a novel. Marquez' insights on love and marriage and aging, the story itself and the magnificence of the language combined to produce a rare experience for me.
Rating: Summary: Possibly the best book I have ever read. Review: A marriage proposal based on a prospective groom's promise not to feed the prospective bride eggplant is classic Marquez. The last page is haunting, you can pick it up anytime you have a minute and be taken away by it.
Rating: Summary: Why I give this book away to everyone i love... Review: Simply put, a classic that should be shared with everyone. To read this book is to understand not only the beauty of our own language, as the translatior deserves high praise, but Garcia - Marquez an author of immeasureable worth.
Rating: Summary: Simply: The Best Novel Ever Written! Review: I hardly think I can say more than that! The very best novel I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: Review for part-time readers Review: This renowned book has been thoroughly lauded in literary circles, and doesn't necessarily need another glowing recommendation. I just want to say to the occasional reader (like myself) who might rather watch Must See TV or go out roller blading than pick up a thick novel that has a rather unpleasant ailment in its title--this book is so worth your while. Yes, it's dense and yes, it's wordy. But what words! (Hats off to translator Rabassa.) Marquez is such a gifted writer in that he is able to--on a much higher plane than most writers--make the reader feel all the pain and all the resignation and even all the euphoria that befalls these characters. Real life should provide such emotional turns. And his charm and flair for the romantic subdue even my brought-up-watching-MTV restlessness. Simply put, this is a great literary work that is immensely readable.
Rating: Summary: His second best book Review: After 100 years of solitude, this is Garcia's best book. Again this great story teller gives us a love story in his poetic style of writing with both having a funny and sad themes in it. I hope a director like B. Bertolucii makes a film out of this great story.
Rating: Summary: A splendid black comedy of love. Lush and lively. Review: This is a book written in rich and beautiful prose. Even in an English translation, the language is musical, picturesque and poetic. The book pretends to focus on an enduring frustrated love; a rejected
suitor, who continues to love one woman although
she has married another.
Instead, for me, the focus of the book is truly on the other love story within it; on the amazingly rich, complex, and true picture of the love, understanding, and pettiness of a long-standing marital love. For anyone who has experienced a "good" marriage, this insightful, poetic, comical
book is a delight.
