Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS !!! Review: ONCE I STARTED READING IT , I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN !!! IT HAD ME LAUGHING THROUGHOUT..AND ALSO SAD ABOUT THE RACIAL SITUATION DOWN THERE. THE SEQUEL 'TANDIA' HAD ME IN TEARS FROM THE START TO THE END.
Rating: Summary: It puts Bryce Courtenay on my "sight unseen authors" list. Review: If anyone had ever told me that I would enjoy a book that revolves so much around boxing I would never have believed them. But there is so much more to this book - it's difficult to say anything more than "Get it. Read it. You'll love it." It put Bryce Courtenay on my list of "sight unseen authors" (authors whose new books I will buy without even reading the first page in the shop). It even made me cry at one point. Tandia was also good, though not in the same class, as was April Fool's Day, though very different, and heartbreaking. Unfortunately, Mr Courtenay has fallen back off my "sight unseen" list with The Potato Factory, which was atrocious. It's almost like it was written by a different person. What was his editor thinking!? But The Power of One? Sensational.
Rating: Summary: Extrodinary!! Review: This book will be exceptionally interesting to all that want to know more about human phsycholy and the human mind. It is written from a point of view of a n inteligent little boy that struggles in South Africa because he's different. He was born in the wrong family and is faced with prejudice from his peers. I advise this book for ages 13+ @please, e-mail me if you would like to suggest a book to ME. thanks
Rating: Summary: I had to read it for Freshman year in Highschool Review: At the end of eigth grade, letters were sent home to the hnrs lit students on the books they would need to read over the summer. My class had to read Power of One. At first, I thought the book was really slow and I hated how much violence, profanity, and sexual encounters 5 year old Peekay encounters. But after you get by the 50 page mark, it does get better. Peekay meets some incredable people that come and go in his life and he needs to learn how to deal with losing a friend. Peekay's goal is to become welterweight champion, like one of his friends, Hoppie, that he meets. Though, by the end of the book you never find out if he becomes champ. I guess that's why there's a sequal, Tandia that I've heard is better than The Power of One. This is not a book I would have just checked out of the library and read for fun, but overall I'm glad to hav read the book.
Rating: Summary: what memories are made of Review: i read this book yesterday i have been there and went through that racial hatred as a english kid in a afrikaans school. this book brought back vivid memories of my youth. i was the only english speaking kid and went through hell. they tortured me at night while the teachers were sleeping. i would love to contact mr. bryce courtenay pekay is me.
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life Review: I read The Power of One when I was a freshman in high school, and it changed my life; it changed the way I view myself and the world, and it gave me the strength to pursue things I might have been afraid to try. I take Courtenay's philosophy of the power of one to heart--"that inside each of us there burns a flame of independence that must never be allowed to go out--that as long as it exists within us we cannot be destroyed..." I saw the movie first--no comparison. I also recently read Tandia, the sequel, and while it was a wonderful book as well, in my mind it didn't measure up. I tell everyone to read The Power of One, hoping it will change them forever, as it changed me.
Rating: Summary: One of the most wonderful and memorable books I've ever read Review: You'll love Doc and Peekay. The characters are memorable just like "Lonesome Dove". The sequel TANDIA is out of print. What a bummer.
Rating: Summary: Bloody Beauty! Review: This was one of the best books that I have ever read. His brilliant description of South African contempt for the British is vivid and exceptional. His use of language manipulated the astounding imagery created by this typical Australian author is a tribute to his brilliance as an author. In actual fact, he is not an author, he is a painter of words, every sentence flowing into the next. What a LEGEND!
Rating: Summary: a wonderful descritpion Review: Bryce Courtenay uses such wonderful decriptive language to show the reader a feeling that peekay feels. The reader knows exactly what he is feeling. When i read this book i couldn't put it down. I read it in three weeks and i was only twelve and couldn't quite understand all of the aspects of the book. But i still could understand enough to absoutly love this book and go on to read his other books and love them also.
Rating: Summary: This book will change your life Review: The power of one is the best book I have ever read. Although a little slow at one point, this book will make you consider your own life, attitudes and behaviours. The story of Peekay will remain with you for years, and motivate you to overcome anything that life confronts you with. You can never read this book too many times. If you have not seen the movie, or even if you have, do yourself a favour and read the book -- it is so much better.
