Summary: An amazing book
Review: This is one of the most powerful and wonderful books I have ever read. I first read it several years ago and have read it many times since. I lent the book to friends and family telling them that they would be hooked by page 6. And they were. My original copy is almost falling apart now as so many people have laughed and cried along with me. I actually felt quite sad when I finished the book that I was not in Peekay's world anymore. I couldn't read another book for a while after this one; it moved me so much and I wanted to savour this book. I put this alongside "To Kill A Mockingbird" as a truly timeless, great book

Summary: The most compelling story from any age for any age.
Review: In the Power of One, Bryce Courtenay takes the reader on a spiritual and nostalgic journey through South Africa. The story is as illuminating as the sun over the African sky. Courtenay knows that even in your dreams, the sun never shines brighter than in the memories of your childhood. This journey ends not with the final word on the final page, but when such a time as the reader finds their own power, and feels again the warmth of the sun and their youth

Summary: This book changed my life!
Review: I really went through a life-change. I agree with anotherreviewer that the ending was uncalled for for Peekay to get revengeviolently, which was exactly what he was fighting against. I disagree with the reviewer that showed such disdain in "believing in yourself." This person also said it was "mediocre prose", I strongly disagree with that. When I read the follow-up, "Tandia", I forgave the author for "The Power Of One's disappointing ending.

Summary: Excellent
Review: A masterpiece! A must read. This is the story of PK, a young English South African and his battle for justice and what is right. He first fights for the English from the hands of their Afrikaner counterparts and then for the black majority from the hands of their white tormentors. I urge you to give this book as a gift to anyone, regardless of their intrest in South Africa.

Summary: Best book I have read since Cider House Rules
Review: The Power of One is such a brain-grabber. Firstoff, we witness the torture of little six-year oldPeekay in the Boer boarding school. I did not think I could read this, but his resilience and fortitude were wonderful to behold. It just goes to show how much the human spirit can overcome. The African way of life is very interesting to read about in this book. I learned a lot about the culture of that area. Watching Peekay grow and learn under his German botonist tutor was satisfying and enviable. The War does not interupt Peekay's instruction with school or boxing and his cleverness in helping out the poor African inmates is fun to read. Please, please read this book. You will never forget it!

Review: It is extremely inspirational and one of the best books I haveever read.

Summary: A powerful story excellently told.
Review: I've read "The Power of One" three times in the pasttwo years and each time it leaves me breathless. Peekay is inherentlyintelligent and athletic and is given the gifts of ambition and determination by his mentors. These qualities allow him to rise above personal obstacles to challenge the racial hatred that surrounds him in his Native South Africa. He becomes a bright beacon of hope for those who share his dreams and opens the eyes of many who do not dare to imagine a different world. You will suffer through his trials with him and joyously share his triumphs. Peekay is the bright spark of hope in all of us and he becomes a part of you as you read his story. This is the best book I have ever read and I will continue to reread it throughout my life.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Inspirational
Review: After having this book on my shelf for 3 years, I took it withme on a sailing trip in the Great Barrier Reef, and read it in 3days. I couldn't put it down - it was much more fascinating than the scenery around me! I was lost in Peekay's world of South Africa and taken by his struggles of life and love. Highly recommended, Courtney is a gifted writer.
