Rating: Summary: The best novel from the best Romantic novelist of all time! Review: Les Miserables is one of the most stirring -- if not the most stirring accounts of French life during the Romantic Period. It introduces you to characters from all walks of life . . . the very wealthy aristocrats to the poorest dregs of society, all thrown together and mixed up in the blender of life. The elaborate plot remains simple to follow, and although Hugo does have a tendency to go off on tangents at points (think the battle of Waterloo scene or the convent descriptions) it always comes as an interruption to a highly tense situtation such that it continues to hold our attention until we reach the final destination that Hugo is after. Such techniques and such carefully crafted characters bring the story to life and allow any person reading this novel to identify with one of the characters -- bringing the reader INTO the story. For example, one of my friends identifies with Javert's one-track minded dedication to a cause, and I identify with Eponine (whom I refer to as the "tragic heroine") because of her desperate love and desire to do what's right despite her harsh conditions. All in all, Hugo's all-inclusive Romantic techniques and extensive descriptive abilities makes this one of the -- if not the -- most superb writings ever created by man.
Rating: Summary: Wow. Review: This is a really swell book. I read it for a book report. I really like the characters. But was Javert really bad? I think he was just preforminbg his duty to the law. THIS BOOK IS NOT ABOUT LOVE. IT IS ABOUT HATE AND SUFFERING! IT IS NOT HAPPY! IT IS DEPPRESSING! IT SHOWS HOW HUMANKIND CAN CRUSH ITSELF. AND I LOVED IT! EVERY WORD!
Rating: Summary: Marvelous... Review: I read the unabridged version, and it was absolutely one of the most amazing stories I've ever read. I think it's a pity that some people insist on editing out the author's comments and digressions, as they only add to the beauty of this amazing masterpiece in literature. Definitely on my top ten list of greatest books!
Rating: Summary: Les Miserables Review: Les Miserables will capture your heart and soul and fill it with passion so intense, you'll read it again and again. After reading Les Miserables, I began to feel the wonder and magic of love, strenght, hope, courage, and so much more. Time and time again I can see and feel the emotions running within the characters. Once you read Les Miserables, you will never feel the same about books and there mysteries they hold within.
Rating: Summary: A story that will touch anyone who has ever loved another Review: I enjoyed reading "Les Miserables" a lot and was very touched by the book. I highly recommend this book for everyone to read - if after having read this book, you are not touched by the story... . .On the surface, "Les Miserables" is the story of how Jean Valjean, the peasant convicted and imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread, seeks and ultimately achieves redemption. However, "Les Miserables" is also the story of a mother's sacrifice for her child (Fantine); a young man facing the challenges of the real world for the first time (Marius); the cruelty that can result from the self-righteous enforcement of the letter of the law (Javert); a person that uses others solely for personal gain (Thernadier); a young woman falling in love and coming to terms with her true upbringing (Cosette); another young woman who loves a man that does not love her (Eponine); a happy-go-lucky orphan that practices random acts of kindness without reward (Gavroche); idealistic student activists confronting the establishment (Enjolras); and a person's struggle with conscience and being true to oneself (Jean Valjean). If you have ever loved another person, read this book and it will become one of your favorites!
Rating: Summary: An amazing book which spans time and captures your heart. Review: From the first time I saw the musical version of "Les Miserables" I was hooked! I was 14, now I am 17. When I read this book it brought my love of Les Miserables to a whole new level. From the first opening lines to the closing paragraph I was hooked. I rarely cry and I cried when I finished reading this book. I could not put this book down until my eyes started hurting. Victor Hugo has amazing talent for writing. I feel that anyone can relate to at least one of the characters in this book in some form of another. The emotions displayed in this book matched those in the musical almost excactly. Anyone who has seen the musical should read this book! It is not just about the French Revolution of 1832, it is a universal story that anyone can apprecaite.
Rating: Summary: YOU WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOURSELF IF YOU READ IT ABRIDGED Review: Okay, the size is intimidating at first, but I'm 12 and I still was thoroughly absorbed in it. The characters were dbeautifuly done and the plot was masterful. Okay, Hugo apparently never heard the word "edit" but I feel proud being able to say that I read the WHOLE THING.
Rating: Summary: Even a teenager can handle this masterpiece! Review: I must admit that I was first drawn to the musical and knew the basic plot from the begining. I will also admit that, because I was on a time limit, I skipped a few pages about Waterloo and the bishop. After I really got into it, though, I read every word about nuns and sewers- and the 1500 pages literally flew by. The charactors are so deep and the plots so complex that I trully couldn't put it down. My parents were complaining that I was reading too much! Everyone should read it. It'll really make you think about your life, dreams, and destiny.
Rating: Summary: It makes me wonder Review: This, throughout my time of living, has got to be the best book that I have ever read. I was was stuck on the gracious, utterly remarkable aspects of the story, and it made me think of a better life not yet lived by myself. Truly, a step in literature where competion against it would have fall short of a miracle in order to compare to its greatly credible teachings.
