Summary: Another 5 stars!
Review: I simply would like to be one more person to praise this magnificent portrayal of mankind. There is a feeling eminating from this book which gives the reader a broader view of reality. Les Miserables has so much to offer, it is truely priceless and beyond reproach. I more than recomend this book to every human being who would like to see more of themselves.

Summary: A literary masterpiece and ongoing classic
Review: I read Les Miserables after becoming slightly interested in the musical. I read the book, and I was instantly obsessed. It is now my favorite book; I take it everywhere with me, and if I have to stand in a line or wait for a movie to start, I just pull it out of my backpack and open it at random.

Victor Hugo is without a doubt, a genius. His writing is so evocative of almost every emotion there is, and his power of description is amzing. He tends to digress at times, but it is worth reading the battle of Waterloo in order to read about Valjean, Javert, Fantine, the Thenardiers, Cosette, Marius, Eponine, and (my personal favorite) ENJOLRAS!

The Norman Denny is by far the best translation. The wording is like poetry, or music, instead of prose. Other translations are word-for-word, and while that is commendable, French sometimes is awkward, translated into English. Norman Denny translates the spirit of Hugo's original work.

I think that in order to be a member of humanity, Les Miserables should be required reading. It is magnificent, and I wish that everyone could enjoy it as much as I do.

Summary: This is a great book!!!
Review: Before I actually began to read this book, I had already heard what it was about and that it was really good, so I decided to find out for myself just how good it really was. And sure enough, I was hooked just after reading the first page. As I was reading this book, I compared it the how the world is now,and to me, there was no difference. I am sure that if Jean Valjean would have lived in this time period, he would have still been treated the same way for being a convict. No one would have believed that after spending nineteen years in prison he would turn his life around and do so many good things for society today. People everywhere should read this book and may be come to realize how wicked the world really is now a days. And may be, we could be like Jean Valjean and try to make the best out of life. Or may be we could be like the good bishop who believed that Jean Valjean was really a good person. It was that bishop who brought about that change in Jean Valjean and maybe we could someday to the same for someone else.

Summary: This is the best book I have ever read in my entire life!
Review: This book by Victor Hugo is the of the best classics in the history of literature. The way that Hugo portrays the characters and intertwines them in with each other in the story is amazing! The complexity of the plot, yet the simplicity of the concept are overwhelming. I hace never read a book better than this one.

Summary: Easily the most AMAZING novel I've ever read!
Review: I love the film adaptions and musical of Les Miserables, but they can't even compare to the greatness of this piece of literature. It's such an epic story, covering such topics as justice vs. the law, and ultimate love and self-sacrifice. Everyone can find something to relate to, something to learn from, and something to enjoy in this novel. The characters truly do come alive in this novel, from the center and hero of the story, Jean Valjean, to the minor characters. I particularly was touched by the story of Fantine, a "minor" character but easily my favourite. This character falls from innocence, and eventually makes an ultimate self-sacrifice for her daughter. I found myself unable to put the book down on many a late night, but especially so on the chapters concerning Fantine. Of course, perhaps my love for "classics" and "epics" and "historical romance" may have helped me enjoy the book so, as I know many people who could barely get through the first 20 pages of the 1400 + page novel. Some people may not have the patience to go through the Waterloo part, etc. It is a quite detailed book, and it does go very much "off-topic" a few times. But I still enjoyed every single word. I hope the size of the book won't make people think twice about reading it, it really is best unabridged. I have read the abridged version and it is quite confusing, and you miss several moving scenes. In my own opinion, everyone should read this book, unabridged...and prepare to be amazed!

Summary: Simple perfection
Review: How one could ever consider this book to be dull is beyond me. To abridge it would be to commit a horrible murder. When one reads a book, the story is not the only thing to be taken into consideration. This masterpiece elegantly put into words some emotions that have seldomly been expressed so clearly and beautifully in mankind's literary history. To me, Jean Valjean rests up there with other classical heroes such as Hamlet, Dante and Aeneas. Simply put, Les Miserables is perfection.

Summary: Terrific Novel, Length of Book is Worth it!
Review: Les Miserables introduces Jean Valjean a famous character in literature. This story takes you into Paris after the French Revolution and Lafayette's death, to the barricades of the uprising of 1832. It is the story of Jean Valjean who stole a loaf of bread which made him a convict. He escapes from prison to start a new life. Javert, the police inspector, who will never let Valjean go free. Fantine the prostitute who touched Valjean's heart and defined the word desperation. The Thenadiers, the amoral villians who with the other characters bring this book to its excellency. This story brings out the desire to escape the prisons of our own minds. This novel is best summed up in its title, Les Miserables, translated is "The Miserables".

Victor Hugo takes us into the Parisian underworld. He shows us the battle between good and evil. Hugo uses Les Miserables as a platform to criticize the French political and judicial systems. He probably did not expect this story to become an epic that has touched the heart for more than a hundred years.

Reading this novel gives a clearer picture of how the French government reacted to the common people. It inspires the hope of an age of rebirth and revolution. There are also many themes played out in this novel that capture your thoughts and emotions. The story battles between good and evil. Morality is also a theme that is used many times in this novel. This book is definitely an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses and touches the heart. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone with an interest in the French Revolutionary times or someone who just wants a story that displays human emotions like you have never read before.

Summary: THE MOST RELEVANT CHARACTERS OF OUR SOLEMN LITERATURE!
Review: Of course everyone has heard of Andrew Loydd Webber's LES MISERABLES, but not everyone knows its origin, which is one of the best novel ever written in the history of man. The novel will sweep you away from the superficial world and profoundly familiarize you with the fact that it, life, could be worse. Deep in France, or so its relevant parts, Victor Hugo served as a tour guide in a ride that will forever amaze you after encountering Jean Valjean's and Fantine's saintly being. After encountering Marius' and Cossete's profound love for each other. After encountering Eponine's sacrificial act in order to save the man who never looked at her the way she wanted him to. After learning that there was an only man who started it all by performing the most benevolent and philanthropic act of handing his silver candlesticks to the man (whom he trust) who stole from him. After reading this novel, my friend, you will come to realize that life for you could be worse. So be thankful.

Summary: A Definite Must- Read!
Review: This is the only book that I was ever sad about finishing! Although the 1463 pages or so last a while, it ws truly depressing to finally realize that there isn't any more. I came to read this through my admiration of the musical, and now I love the book even more than the schonberg interpretation. Although the musical is awesome. Anyone in any way interested in French Lit. should definitely add this to their collection, as well as anyone looking for relateable characters. there is something for everyone in this book!
